He did what he had to. Now they don’t have to expose Myers.

If only he could have picked up a third goalie so they don’t have to risk Holtby.

- Totes McGoats

You can only protect one goalie, Holtby will be exposed regardless. And I'd pray Seattle takes him willingly. There are plenty of back up options available

Even if Seattle passes on him, he can be traded, with some salary retained if need be. If Dave Rittich can get traded, I have zero worries that Holtby can't be moved.

Really?

That's the point. Nucker clearly stated he was handed the keys to a Ferrari and he reaped the rewards. In Detroit, Yzerman is starting from scratch. How much time does he get to prove he deserves the hype?

- bloatedmosquito

6 years from now. His hype should be noticeable by year 6 of which he is already 2 in

Canucks trade a 4th for Madison Bowey and a 5th

this guy was on waivers by Detroit and went unclaimed. Yet another reclamation project

- Codes1087

Another former Rocket D! Added with Myers and Edler you guys are rocking. Now trade for Schenn

Can’t they just protect X number of players instead of F-D-G?

If you're retaining, what's the point? Save $2m only to buy another back up at $2m, same cap space, there is no flexibility gained in that

Ive won my dynasty pool the last three years running by predicting player upswings, no one is always right but i tend to do alright. Looking forward to how this one plays out i time, i certainly be keeping tabs. Bertuzzi is a first line player on exactly one team, and thats the team with the worst top6 in the league.
- neem55

no one cares (I'm kidden)

As for Bertuzzi - he'll continue to be a 1st liner on that team until or IF someone unroots him but at this point you're hedging that bet on a number of guys (Raymond, Veleno, Berggren) who have yet to play a single NHL game.

Starting from scratch is a way better position than getting handed the keys to a team full of overpaid washed up vets full of NTC's with a hands-on owner watching over your shoulder.
- Nucker101

Plus, you didn't even mention that no UFA wanted to come here. It's obvious that JB had to overpay some players just to ice a full lineup. That's not his fault, that's just the market.

Unless you're a total hater, it's kind of clear why JB needed a decade to get the fresh start that Yzerman walked straight into.

I'd imagine you'd get back a half decent draft pick or prospect if you're retaining salary.

I think its always 1G but I haven't looked in a long time. I think it was 7F-3D-1G or 8 Players and 1G

Obvious hyperbole aside, you're right. It's an apples to oranges situation and yes, bad Canadian teams are not high on free agents wishlists aside from maybe a hometown boy wanting to come home. It's not fun being on a bad hockey team under the Canadian microscope.

Meanwhile Tampa is a prime destination for players.

Detroit is a harder sell, great history there but not exactly the best city to live in for a young rich athlete.

Ah, well that blows a hole in my being promoted to AGM then doesn’t it.

I’m a bad goat.

Ehhhh Dubnyk was retained at 50%+7th round pick got a 5th after a season of similarly poopty numbers. That Cup-winning clout may sway someone but he's on 4 years of bad numbers so I'm skeptical

Yeah, like I said, you can't blame JB for the overpaid contracts. You have to overpay to get players to play here so that's not JB's fault. Is what it is.

Just based on everything you listed, I agree with you that you can't really judge Benning until he's at least a dozen seasons in.

And 12 might seem a lot but you can't compare that to other teams. It's apples and oranges.

Yzerman is ridiculously overrated, he'll get exposed in Detroit.
- Nucker101

About as badly overrated as Judd Brackett is a a head of scouting and as bad as Benning is as some sort of drafting guru.

even JB admitted he over paid with no excuse of location and market. Why make it an issue when its a known mistake...?

- NuckUp

Exactly! Why make it an issue? Especially since the many, many overpaid contracts were actually justified to get players to sign here. The cost of doing business in this market.

Which also means that the mismanagement of the cap isn't actually mismanagement. JB has actually managed the cap magnificently if you factor in the Canadian city surcharge.

So with Podkolzin done will he sign? Or is the world championship going to prevent?

It's not an issue unless he keeps making the same mistake over and over and over again

48 points in 78 games at -23 doesn’t scream first line ability to me. Bertuzzi is a middle 6 guy on most teams, not sure why you are so high on him

I understood that he was still restricted until the roster for the worlds was chosen and would still be restricted if he was chosen but opted out. Only “free to sign” if he isn’t chosen.

Sorry, no link

Ya I remember that as well. Would be nice to have a look at him for a few games but it seems unlikely
