That decent prospect is a 24 year old former 5th round pick, 4th line LW that would have a hard time holding down a job on the Marlies. Much better available on waivers than this bum. Bufaloons got fleeced. - winsix
I hate to say it, but given the prices paid, I would have preferred Hall over Foligno. |

This is a sad tradecenter when January is #1 on the tradebait board.
Also I wonder who had to scramble to put together the Janmark highlight pack this morning at 6am.

Disagree. You can't just wait to trade guys until you have a 'bonafide replacement' you may have to take a step back in one position to bolster an area of weakness. Up the middle the Leafs are fine even without Kerfoot he is not essential to their success in my opinion.
If trading him improves the D by a signifigant amount and perhaps gets a player with term, draft picks then there definitely is a reason to trade him. Spezza would be fine as the 3rd line Centre, we are talking Kerfoot here - he's a steady eddie player. Has a nice game once in a while but nothing spectacular.
Engvall is perhaps more likely to be moved but I'm fine with either of them going if the deal is right. - Cush29
Who out there is available that would be a big time upgrade for the Leafs on D? Also, you still have to think about the expansion draft. 7 forwards and 3 D is likely what they will go with.

There is no point in trading for another UFA at this point, and what do the Leafs really have left to trade? Cant trade away all our prospects, well have nothing left for the future. - Archaic
Kerfoot for a D. |

Nope. Foligno is more of what the leafs needed.
I'd rather pay the higher price and get the guy who's been more consistent this year.
I dont think Hall would fit with the team chemistry. Foligno should do that just fine.

Leafs are paying 25% from what I saw
BJs retain 50% in trade to Det
Det retains 50% in trade to Tor - senstroll
Nice. Thanks
Can you keep at it and get to 12.5%, 6.25%, etc? |

Not what we needed and it sounds like we were likely never part of serious trade negotiations.
Hoping the Leafs land a depth D to separate Marincin from the pack.
Nash + Foligno + Rittich for 1,3,4,4,7 is pretty damn good. We kept all of our top prospects (Sandin, Liljegren, Robertson, Amirov) which makes me happy.
Let's go!!!!! |

Hall is a better player than Foligno. I think that's not really a surprise.
But we already have a bunch of Taylor Hall-like players. Guys who can skate and pass and shoot who aren't physical and don't really like the dirty areas of the ice. All year a common thing we've collectively said is, "We need another Hyman." Foligno is not as good as Hyman, but he fits the bill on what we mean when we say that. We needed more someones who will get in and get physical and muck and make life unpleasant for the opposition's defense, and on the other side of the red line, they can make life more unpleasant in our D-Zone. - Monkeypunk
Agreed. Didnt want hall, i like what Foligno brings. |
|
|
|
The cost for Foligno was market value.
The cost for Hall was below market value because the Sabres tank his worth and they’re desperate for any return.
Foligno is the better fit for the Leafs. If the Leafs needed more of a offensive minded player, then Hall would’ve been the better choice.
Leafs got their guy. Boston got their guy. Sabres lose again. |

I have to imagine Hall was handcuffing the Sabres with his NMC. He got to decide where he was going.
No idea if he was even available to the Leafs.

He did. Superpest.
I don't remember his offensive game, which I think may be MIA. |

Hall had some control over where he went, might have influenced price and destination. I'm happy with the addition of Foligno, a team captain and will play hard the way Hyman plays hard. Hoping Hall returns to form for the playoffs as a rental, when he has only played for teams that really suck was a long shot dream IMO. Have to think as a top six player on all those garbage teams, he was part of the problem. Oilers ran him out of town. |

If they are trading a guy like Kerfoot (with term) then the list of 'who is available' is pretty much anyone a GM wants to trade I guess. I"m not saying trade Kerfoot for a rental necessarily but even then maybe it is that - a rental D (like say a Jamie Orleski from Dallas) + + for Kerfoot.
The fact Kerfoot has 2 years left on his deal at 3.5 makes him pretty appealing to some teams I would think.
The Leafs need to improve on D if they can, someone to bump Dermott to the 7 spot would be nice but we will see what Dubie can do today - might be too much of an ask. How many teams have gone out before the deadline and got 2 forwards, a goalie AND a D man?
Kyle "sits on his hands, no risk taking, WWE watching, Safe" Dubas has!

Let me take the other side:
I have to imagine that Hall was more than happy to get the hell out of Buffalo, going to any playoff team to restart his season and get a better contract next year.
My guess is he was on the I-90 seven minutes after the trade, doing 80 mph towards Boston. |

What would the Leafs possibly trade him for? We have little left to trade unless we start trading Robertsen or Sandin which would be dumb, and there is no point in trading him for something mediocre in return.
I wouldnt mind Miles Wood, or a solid dman, I just dont see it happening. - Archaic
A defenceman is a must right now... Even two. Or the rest the moves are insignificant.
If Bogo gets hurt right now pretty sure we're left with a Marincin + Dermott bottom pair. Another injury on top of that and half of our blueline is made up of those two and Sandin.
That should all be terrifying for anyone who remembers what it looked like when Rielly and Muzzin were both hurt last year. |
