Well it truly depends on the asks of either player....
Both should be kept if the price is right imo.
Hyman bring something the Leafs need moving forward.
I don't think they can afford to lose Rielly on defense despite him not being Nicklas Lidstrom. - Scabeh
Rielly is what we all hoped Jack Gardiner could become. |

Lets assume Freddy is gone.
in the off season, which one of these do you do?
assuming can only afford 1..and these are the only options (no, trading willy is not one of them)
Sign Hyman, Trade Rielly
re-sign Rielly, let Hyman walk - senstroll
Hyman will be signed, Rielly still has a year, so not sure I get the point. Trading Rielly is possible, but unlikely to get a good d-man in return so none of the above. Freddy is already gone.

If Freddie and Rielly are gone, that’s $10M, adding Hyman’s $2.25, I think you can resign Zach, get a new goalie and restructure the D with Sandin up and a new signing or trade |

It's all moot anyway. They don't know who they lose in the expansion draft and how much cap they will have.
They don't know what the NHL is going to do about cap alleviation so teams can stay together. |

This really is a year to swing for the fences (and practice the Jose bat flip) - Canada Cup
I hear this, and I'm not sure I see the pitch to swing for the fences . . . What is the swing for fences move? I hear things proposed, and I don't know how much they move the needle and how much they affect the chemistry.
Try to add Hall?
Try to add Jenner/Foligno & Savard?
Who, other than Hall, is a top-6 winger that plays the left side, that is on the block that will make a significant enough difference that is worth the price? Rakell?
I am currently assuming that Granlund, Forsberg and Ekholm are not on the block.

Rielly has one more, so we dont need to re-sign him in the off season.
But overall, depends on how much hyman wants, anything over 5-5.5, we'd have to let him walk.
Our back end is finally stable....well more stable. Keep rielly, walk hyman.
Although rielly has been meh for a while now.
Also depends on how sandin plays. - Fakepartofme
I’d been thinking that way most of the year. I’m starting to think Hyman is more useful than Rielly right, especially as you say, depending how Sandin plays. All the reports were that he was great except for injuries. Our D has been great but the heavy lifting has come from Holl and Muzzin |

For those of you who may have missed the Lucic trip:
https://twitter.com/TicTa...tatus/1379269457466507265 - Atomic Wedgie
Was a slew foot not a trip. As dirty a play as there is and the official was right there. The well deserved cartwheel that Lucic did after the beauty hit by Simmonds was a penalty that is called occasionaly (never on Weber). |

Maybe the Alberta teams shouldn't have thought that just getting Lucic-like players for 50 years was a good strategy.
Maybe they should have been trying to diversify their lineups during the good times.
Sorry, I have no sympathy for the Alberta teams, who thought that people would accept dirty players forever. I'm glad they cancelled the pipeline of dirty players to Alberta.

If you HAVE to pick one and both guys are reasonable money wise.
I'd keep Rielly. |

Realistically, they weren't going to call a slewfoot, as that's a match penalty.
Yeah, I know, but let's take this one step at a time. |

If dubas is able to do these things and not part with a 1st, thats a bonus.
sounds like they might be able to.
or use the 1st to add a diff maker. Have to wonder how many teams have a 1st on the table. currently all of the top teams still have their 1st - senstroll
I took a quick look backwards and there haven't been many first round picks or top prospects dealt for rentals - unless they are elite. The only rental I see that "maybe" gets in that category is Hall - and I'm not really loving his fit.
Assuming KD is only in on rentals then I think it's Liljegren and picks (not a first) kind of territory. ...I think. |

Specially for the leafs, its taking them how many years now to get to this point?
Without knowing what Sandin can do at the nhl level for more than 10 games, you keep Rielly. |

Pretty sure Hyman will get more than that.
But yes, young guys developing into actual NHL player is key for any team's cap management.
