The ship hasnt sailed on the playoffs yet. If they can beat BOS today and tomorrow they will tie BOS in points. BOS still has 2 games in hand of course but those only matter if they win and theres still a 3rd game VS BOS too\

Still a lot of hockey to be played.

If they lose to 2/3 BOS however the hole becomes too deep to climb out of.

Creativity is missing but so is a real net from presence or bumper player, We have no one to play the hartnell or Simmonds role. JVR was great earlier in the year but I can’t remember the last time he got a good tip or screen goal on the PP. I hate the two unit system as well, load up on one and get going. I’d like to see G JVR Coots Ghost and Jake

The reason why they don't have any success from the bumper player is that they don't create any movement of the PKers to open up that pass. They just pass it back and forth up top. If you don't get the defense to move, passing lanes and shot lanes will not open up. JVR's ability on deflections is well proven. Have to get deflectable shots to the net for him to use that skill.

yes, most just stand around while puck is passed around the perimeter. once in awhile we get a shot from blue line. need to work plays down low better with more movement. zone entry is terrible even w slingshot. TK and Patrick MIA.

There's no other word for it than "extraordinary" that this site hasn't seen a single major upgrade or 2.0 since like 2005. I don't even mean it as a slag, it's like time traveling every time I'm stop by.
- countreeman28

And yet, it gets 0.56 million unique visitors a day. If you are content with the revenue flow, no pressure to upgrade really.

The overall movement is just lacking, the guy in the net front spot needs to bounce out and be a threat from the side of the net as well. No one moves it’s just stationary passing. Provorov adds zero at the top, have you ever seen him fake a shot?

Halak positive Covid test.

So the Bruins will go the next two weeks without their top 2 goalies.
Here is the Flyers chance to get back in the playoff mix.

I had advocated for a cycle type approach with TK and Giroux in the corner, constant movement is key on the PP

No I haven't. I'm sure you see the same thing but I can tell watching where Provorov is going with the puck before he moves it. He skates 3 strides towards the player he is passing it to. Dragging the D with him. They're moving as he is. No deception. If I can tell, the PKers certainly can also.

No doubt in my mind this team goes on a run and gets into the playoffs. They do this every year, stink up the joint for long stretches and then look like world beaters the next.

The problem is this likely won’t amount to a Stanley Cup or even a trip to the ECF. So in other words they will do just enough for the core to stick together for another season.

Yup, what is going on when they are breaking down video. The most frustrating part about this team is a lot of what’s going wrong is fixable

Well, sports is a weird business.

Take Dan Snyder. He has run that franchise to the bottom. Result? The franchise value has gone through the roof.

I think the window to to make a trade closed 5 to 7 days ago. Don’t bother now.

With this said....My two favorite Flyers that I really push for are Patrick and Provorov. However, I’d pack their bags myself fit Seth Jones in one deal. Would you guys do it?

Reposting this from the previous blog, because we often argue about Couts's worth and this large sample set seems to me to fairly comprehensively end the discussion:

Right now Sean Couturier is 9th in the league in points per game for centers.

What is easier to obtain in a hockey trade or draft, an all time scoring center or a very good 2nd line center to play behind Couturier? I think you know the answer, that is why Fletcher went out and signed Kevin Hayes.

- jd250

Couturier's comprehensive stats:

Eh, lets not play that small sample game. This is less than half of a regular season and Couturier has played the equivalent of about 1/3 of a regular season.

1. Look at the years 2017/18 through now, which is the peak of Couturier's career, with a minimum of 1800 mins played over this span (I chose that window to include some of the younger players). This period is tilted in favor of Couts because it includes his peak years but other players, in particular Point, Aho, and Petersson are very young at this stage and Toews is getting old.

2. Look at 5 on 5 stats, which is far more revealing than ES stats (the latter includes OT, 4 on 4, PK with the goalie pulled and so on), as 5 on 5 is really what we mean when we think of ES.

3. Look only at active centers. Exclude players who have played on wing and center (like Panarin, Marchand, Giroux). I keep Aho and Stamkos, because they are mostly centers and would be called as such today.

Couturier then ranks 18th on that list.

Note, this is right around where he ranks in the nhl.com survey of analysts (he was 17th last year and 18th this year).

EDIT: I mean normalized 5 on 5 stats (5 on 5 per 60 min)

this guy claimed the devils were a playoff team last season after watching one period of hockey, but the ship has sailed on the flyers playoff hopes with 20 games left.

They won't.

But Myers + TK + 1st/ any top Prospect + bit piece I certainly would if we plan to resign Couts.

Which "comprehensive" stat did you rank him by? If a player ranks 18th on a stat list among centers, does that make him a #1 center?

Let’s remember what provoked this conversation—someone saying that Coots isn’t a 1C. I think the point should be that Couturier is in fact, statistically, a 1C. Which is the argument that started all this. I also rechecked his stats for the last few years including this one and he ranks consistently between 9-22nd.

The other thing I would point out is who stand in his way. Many times the centers ahead of him are on teams in the western conference or non-playoff teams. Examples that actually stand in his way are on the Penguins and Lightning. Some of the matchup will come down to other players in a 7 game series.

We've all seen other teams stretch and confuse the Flyers PK w/ constant movement and position switching to great effect. High time the Flyers started doing a bit more of that themselves

One play kind of says it all. Clutterbuck was playing Clutterbuck games in front of Carter and Morin let him have it with a Pronger like cross check at the whistle. Cal would normally use that as a chance to punch, facewash or otherwise jump a guy. He saw it was Morin and backed away without even making a move towards him...even Martin who was to Sam's side just kind of slid over and didn't grab or collar Sam.

He will make an occasional mistake and a dumb penalty here and there, but for now Im willing to live with that because quite frankly all our Dmen take lazy/dumb penalties a couple times a game.
