So if another few teams have a better 1C, then a team can't be considered a contender? This is just another example of how you don't get the team concept.

I would add some really good defenseman also in Stevens and Niedermayer.

You have to look at the totality of say the two teams you are considering contenders.

If one team is substantially better than the other, they can get by with any given player in 1 position being weaker than the other player in the same position. But if a team is the much weaker one, it could well be that the weaker team has a good player on his own merit, just not good enough to bridge the gap.

The considerations of Couturier has to be made in the context of how the team he is on fares relative to others, and how he as an individual compares to other players in the same position.
In other words, the determination is a relative one, not an absolute one.
