I agree with you, this theory only comes from the fact that if Stevie is to take a chance on a goalie in the first two rounds this is the year to do so considering that whoever he does select won’t be NHL ready until around the time that the wings are looking to be competitive anyways.

He may take the chance that Cossa is available in the 2nd but I’m just saying given his history I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the Swedish netminders name called. Stevie knows how important good goaltending is to have a winning team and he doesn’t seem like the type that wants to address a long term solution to the position through trade or free agency.

Hey, Red. Thanks for stopping by!!!

At this point, Detroit has so many holes that I’d go for just about anything!

With so many play-off contenders up against the cap this year, I’m wondering if The Captain would take a salary dump and a 1st to facilitate a trade....then use the 1st to snag a G in this year’s draft. Saying this without knowledge of which contenders have a 1st available they could throw our way along with an elephant contract, so completely hypothetical. Corse the 1st could come from another team. Just a thought...

Couple of observations from the cheap seats :

1) Detroit was long overdue for this win. I've said it before, that Detroit is further along than most give them credit. I saw what Yzerman did in Tampa. He turned the entire franchise around. Tampa was a backwater organization from top to bottom with halfass facilities and staffing. Scouting was a joke. He built a world class operation at every level. His name should be on Tampa's 2nd Cup because the Lightning are not here without Yzerman's guiding hand. Sure, he had the gift of Stamkos and Hedman waiting when he arrived, but he drafted Vasilevskiy and built an elite scouting department that dug up diamonds in the rough like Palat, Point, and Kucherov. I have full confidence that Detroit is going to be dangerous in a couple more seasons.

2) Erne is riding high on a PDO wave. Good for him. I always liked him in Tampa, but he just couldn't carve out a spot for himself on a really deep team. He has a ton of heart, so you want him to succeed.

3) Like my fellow Tampa fan said earlier in the thread, Vasi is the MVP and the Lightning's record without him is not good. Tampa's right-side defense is a trainwreck without Cernak. With a backup between the pipes and Luke Freaking Schenn on the ice, you knew Detroit could take this one.

4) Greiss is solid. Keep that guy.

5) Good to see that geezer Filppula get a goal. He's another one that I always liked in Tampa. His offense had tailed off already, but he was a solid two-way pivot and defensively responsible. I know he catches a lot of flak now, so good to see him pot one.

I’d say throw caution to the wind, if we have a few picks gained as the salary dump at this TDL. What’ve we got to lose?

The only thing I’d ask is How do we fill the gaping hole in net if we don’t get a G in the draft? I know we have a metric ship-ton of holes, so trying to fill them via draft is a good way to do what needs to be done, why take a G in the Top 10 is a valid question.

Petrezulli is looking to be a stud, so getting a good G via normal drafting is possible, to support your point Feds. I’m just throwing it out there for discussion.

I hear you but even with the promising prospect pool I’d love to have more scoring talent. That’s the teams biggest weakness. Arguably they are playing great D this year based on the skill they just can’t score enough.

Dude, that’s the tough part: We need some of EVERYTHING 🤨. The D is much better than I figured it would be, still a looong way to go, but somewhat sustainable. The thing that kills me, like you; scoring. Personally, I have no clue how The Captain sleeps at night trying to figure out how to fill all of the holes on this team.

I’d be remiss not to mention Petruzzeli. Even though he didn’t win the Hobey Baker, he was a finalist. He had a very good year, and I hope Yzerman can get him signed to his ELC. There was a lot of hype when he was signed, but his first collegiate year was a pedestrian .894. He jumped to .904, then .920, and this year .926 and 1.89 GAA in 29 games. He’s looking more and more like a real deal prospect for the pipeline. Just want to make sure he doesn’t hit the market

I think that, if we can keep 2 top lines together, the goals will come more easily. Losing Bertuzzi, Fabbri and Zadina and having mismatched lines just made it way too easy for teams to cover the top players. I feel like we’ve had 4 top 6 guys (or less at times with injury). We really need these guys healthy. I’d love to see Raymond make the jump if he can

I think your most likely trade partners for that are Tampa and the islanders. I don’t think there’s any other team in a position to win that is desperate enough to trade a 1st to get out of a contract.

As mentioned earlier Sebastian cossa is another goalie currently projected to go in the second round that may be worth a reach on at the end of the 1st. He plays behind a really good team in Edmonton but he is still a 6’6 goalie with a .943% through 10 games.

When I started this conversation it was on the basis that the wings aren’t going to be in a position to contend for another couple years and will be able to acquire those scoring forwards over the next few drafts since it doesn’t take as long to develop them.

If the wings organization has confidence in this kid then I would heavily lean towards a skater if the wings wind up selecting in the 5-10 range. If they do pass on wallstadt I guess we’ll likely find out at the draft how high they are on in petruzelli in the later rounds.

Berggren might be ready too and the stats don’t jump off the page for Veleno because he was on a weaker SHL team but he’s getting closer. More so than forwards they need a D that can help drive offense. Seider should do that and one of Power/Hughes would be great too. Either way this should be a more competitive/exciting team each season moving forward.

Yeah goaltending is just so hard to go with. Not that he was a top 10 pick but look at Carter Hart. He goes from a young stud last season to the worst goalie in the league this season.

That’s a solid point. There seems to be some consensus about defensemen needing 200-300 NHL games to really get there. That can be after 4 years of development in other leagues. Goalies, man, flip a coin. Some get it quicker than others. Forwards, I think you’re right, that is a quicker development in some ways. Teaching a scoring center to be a 2 way center can take a decade sometimes, but that’s more of a mindset thing

Mrazek is a good case. He can be lights out, or lights very much on. I loved that kid early on, and got to see him against Dallas today. He was feeling it for sure. I miss that kid, just a fun personality.

Berggren is the diamond right now (for forwards). He was getting a lot of press. Veleno, I don’t know. Thank God he can skate. If he needs to develop as a third line guy (basically the next era of Helm) while he tries to find his groove it’s good to have him around. I wouldn’t mind him knuckling down with Glenny as a mentor (if we still have him) and get the mechanics and conditioning right.

Yeah, it was actually back to 2010. Helm was, I think, the only Red Wing in today’s game that played in that one, Osgood had a perfect record against TB when he retired.

So what are the odds that Petruzzeli will be in Grand Rapids anytime soon ? I'd like to see him play here in person. They could have him compete for the backup job and maybe get him a few games. Nagle has been pretty good for GR this year... although the team has been on a bit of a slide the last week or more. He's now 22 years-old... so the time to get him playing pro hockey is now.

Seems like that would be up to Petruzzelli. Wings only have his rights until Aug 15.

Feds is right. If, for some reason, he doesn’t like the organization he can walk as a free agent. The negotiation will probably be ELC. This one, for whatever reason, feels a little shaky.

More reason for concern, two players from Quinnipiac have already signed with NHL teams. They’re available, just no word on KP

His season only ended a week ago so maybe he’s in no rush but it will definitely be concerning if he’s not signed in the next week or so.

Maybe Yzerman is waiting until after the trade deadline? He does have 4 SPCs available though.

Golies are like me & my ex: 1 week I was knight in shining armour, the next I was the court jester headed to the Hangman because I wasn't good enough 😏😑

I'd literally beat my head against a wall if I was a goalie....those guys are the Al Hrobosky of hockey (Al was "the mad - or wild depending on the day - Hungarian"....real nut-job....). When they're on....wow. When they're not...WOW!

I’ve done some digging, but can’t find any recent interviews. Yardbarker mentions watching to see if he signs. Not much outside of that. ELCs are pretty much all the same except:

Pending FAs are now more demanding, saying if their teams don’t sign them and burn the first year of the deal, they’ll walk. I haven’t heard anything like this for Petruzzelli, but it’s become more and more common. The other holdup is bonuses (schedule a, schedule B, etc). Lou Lamarillo almost never signs for the full bonus schedule (Marner lost out on millions) but Matthews made the debate public via the media forcing the Leafs hands. Lou was let go shortly thereafter.

Opportunity-wise, Detroit is wide open. Jobs can be earned and taken.

The old joke. The best athletes in Detroit are the backup quarterback and the backup goalie. Every time the starter screws up those guys get the heroes treatment
