Tampa is also getting the following:
1) Production up and down their lineup.
2) CF% 51.90
3) HDCF% of 51.75
4) xGF% of 52.52

When you have a high PDO and everything else is average or below, yeah, PDO tells you there's a lot of luck involved, but when everything is firing it really doesn't say much IMO. - Rinosaur
It says you have above average goaltending and shooting talent. |

Peanut butter is good and versatile so I agree with your analogy. - Feds91Stammer
Peanut butter is a term used in finance to describe numbers used because there was insufficient data, time or knowledge to do something that was actually accurate or purposefully thought out.
I cringe if I have someone tell me they Peanut butter something.

It's just not a great stat. There are far too many outside factors to combine with it.
Right now the Pens are basically average in all categories with a high PDO which definitely shows they're relying on goaltending, but with a wounded lineup it's also not capturing what this team looks like with Geno and Blueger back in.

Well you literally said they're relying on unsustainable goaltending. |

It’s the easiest and quickest way to see if results are generally sustainable. Coach of the year always seems to be the top PDO team and then they get fired 2 seasons later. |

It's quick and easy, yeah, but there are just too many variables that affect it.

I said they are getting carried by it, which they are. They are still good obviously but they are nowhere near as dominant as their record suggests aka they need Kucherov back. |

I don't understand, I don't think it's inability to calculate for injured players not playing is a problem with it. There may be some valid criticisms of PDO, but I don't think this is it. |

Well when you try to use it project where a team will go and you're not calculating the fact you're getting major pieces back into your lineup, I don't think it's a good future indicator. |

Well when you use a month of lucky results against poopty teams to project where a team will go it’s not a good future indicator. |

For the record I'm not trying to argue the Pens are a cup favorite or anything. I'm just trying to state that while their PDO does reflect stellar goaltending at the moment, that it doesn't really give much of an indication of how deep this team can go until we see them healthy again.

Prior to the rash of injuries the Pens were finally starting to fire on all cylinders and when everyone went down so did their overall team game, then goaltending and some decent depth scoring kicked them up.
Also, NYI and BOS are not poopty teams. |

I think PDO by it's very nature, shouldn't be used at all as a future indicator. The whole idea is that teams regress to 100. But if a team is stuck consistently at below or above it, then maybe it's time to take a deeper look into the goaltending or shooting percentages. I don't think better forwards are going to really change that much.
For what it's worth, I think the sample of this season is too small right now to draw any huge indications from PDO, and no team is too far off the average. Caps are actually riding the highest PDO right now, and that's kind of what I see too. A bubble that's about to burst. |

I agree completely. Others here are using PDO to argue why the Pens aren't likely to go deep.
