It always pisses me off to hear the tired narrative that politicians are lazy.

FFS, imagine having to head out at the end of every day to attend some crap community event to say a five minute greeting and answer uneducated questions.

As always, I think the broad brush is a silly, blunt, and usually faulty gauge to wield.

In Canadian politics anyway, the opportunities for corruption are pretty limited except may at the local level. In the US where money rules the political process the corruption relates more to getting what you need to finance your political ambitions.

Of course there are stupid politicians, but not that many get to the Cabinet table.

We (collectively) (frank)ed up voting. Except for many years ago, I was in non political jobs but I worked with lots of politicians, mostly Cabinet ministers. Most - certainly not all - were in it for the right reasons. Many kind of moved their focus on staying in power so they could keep doing good things and then stopped doing good things.

But there were lots that I respected a lot in every party, including in Harris’ Cabinet. One of my favourite people of all time was one his ministers. She closed every bar in every city in every province we visited, talking to everyone.

These people worked their asses off.

Abuse of power is way old. Mulroney expensed his daughter's $1 million wedding, and when he was accused of taking significant kickbacks for granting Airbus a large order, he sued the Canadian goverment for $37 Million, settling for $2 million. He later publicly admitted to taking at least $250K of the $5 million in kickbacks he was accused of while in office, but never gave back any of it. Not a (frank)ing dime, even the $2 million he soaked from the Federal government for defamation of character.
