I will take a stab.

The data SCREAMS of aberration. This team was never a contending team, not now and not in the future (imo). However, there were many seasons of competitive hockey and over all, its largely the same team.

Such teams do not suddenly go to the bottom feeding track on merit.

A large # of factors have boomeranged:
1. Overly rosy assessment of where the youngsters were in their readiness by Holmgren and Fletcher.
2. The infusion of Patrick and Lindlblom coming off what they did.
3. The lack of training camp.
4. Covid break
5. Packed schedule.
6. Domino effect of Nisky absence.
7. Goalie play <->poor D play feedback loop.
8. Lackadaisical play by Hayes.

Hard it may be for people to accept, we are simply not that bad, and next year this will all be sorted out, and we will be back on the patented Flyers track of optimistic mediocrity.

I'm usually fairly adept at finding a silver lining in a season when the Flyers don't do well or are beaten by a better team, but I'm really struggling with this one. I understand that COVID plays a factor into all this, along with the relatively young age of most of the players, but they're just going through the motions on most nights. The coaches aren't helping the situation either and I think AV did a great job in his first season. The product on the ice at this point is just unacceptable!

Maybe I'm the only one, but I find the covid explanation as just an excuse. Does it suck going through this, yes. Is it more difficult at times, no question yes. All teams are going through this and cherry picking teams that are younger is just more BS.

Worst case scenario a player or maybe two struggle through it, not full teams.

There was no covid pandemic two years ago...maybe they were preparing then for in advance.

I think the most frustrating part is I never hear anyone (players, coaches, gm, anyone) go on record with their frustration then actually go out and do something about it. I am so tired of all the company speak, if the players are tired of losing go out and do something about it. Even if the team went full force and played hard and still lost...fans would be ok with that.

Ok, I'll bite on your laundry list of factors:

1) Isn't this a problem in and of itself? Talent evaluation is the main job of management and if they think players are better than they actually are, that's a serious problem!
2) Was Lindblom's diagnosis and treatment the impetus for the team playing above their talent level? Definitely possible!
3) Every team is going through the results of no training camp
4) I'll be interested to see how teams with COVID pauses in season finish up in the standings as opposed to those who did not
5) See #4
6) See #1-Fletcher thought Sanheim, Myers, et.al. would be able to replace some/most of what Niskanen brought to the team. Also, Niskanen was brutal during the playoffs.
7) These are the two biggest issues with the team and go hand in hand. How are they fixed moving forward?
8) Hayes is not playing to his potential, but that can be said about most of the players on the team. My bigger issue is the lack of accountability and I also wonder why Hayes is dogging it most games.

A franchise history worst GA/GAA for one month was pretty improbable. Back in Jan 1993 -- still a very high-scoring era in the NHL -- Flyers weren't even close to the worst GAA in the league with their 4.40 GAA for the month. A couple clubs were over 5.00 that month.

Back then, a 4.41 GAA for a month was really bad but not astounding. For this era, it's staggering and inexcusable regardless of the schedule, COVID and other issues.

But back then you did not have such a perfect storm then did you? Two guys coming off major injuries and generally playing like 4th liners or worse (Patrick, Oskar). Two guys who over-achieved in regular season last year: Meyer, Sanheim. One guy who is simply not ready to carry a 1st pairing without significant help (Provy). One very young goalie who faced the huge adversity without time to put it together (Hart). Some of the new D sucks.


If it was much more than that, why are our veterans having pretty much the same seasons they have had recently? Couturier, Hayes, Giroux, Voracek, JVR and even Laughton: none of them are on track to having seasons worse than their recent career averages and many are on track to doing much better.

If it was a team wide malaise, explain why nobody aged 25+ except Moose is afflicted with this malaise?

I told myself I would give them 1 more season, same thing then I'm out completely. They could win the cup for all I care.

When I mentioned COVID having an impact, I should have specified that certain teams have paused in season due to positive cases. Not all teams have had to deal with that.

I agree that there has been a lot of empty promises and no real follow through when it comes to wanting to "right the ship". Words mean little when not supported by action!

I think Scotty struggled early...but I think he’s improving. Morganti is annoying...I prefer guys that can relate to certain circumstances, because they have been in them...different strokes I guess.

Based on their AHL play they are upgrades. 3 of those 4 are 4th line dime a dozen players every organization has in their system or team.

Those 2 have more upside than those 4 so demote the others and let them play. At a minimum they would be hungry and motivated.

Agreed! Hartnell will be just fine when he gets used to it. Don't like Morganti one bit. Not on Flyers broadcasts and not on the WIP morning show (I listen after Eagles games sometimes). I do miss Bill Clement!

Get Allison up here before he gets hurt!!! Like someone said they are 23 years old. Physically they are mature. Few more AHL games cant hurt I suppose but this team is lifeless, boring, and not motivated.

so the Pens somehow have no picks for years yet still are competitive. Yes it was Crosby and Malkin but this season not so much, injuries etc they still have a competitive team. I think the Flyers did a good job drafting but they needed more speed in the prospects. I know speed is not just straight line, I know speed is puck movement but they need some pure skaters.

Hartnell strikes me as a big dufus. Nothing he says seems to have any analysis whatsoever. Not just that, he doesn't have his goofiness of playing days. Ergo: indistinguishable from Colby Cohen in substance.

Maybe I am missing something. I am usually in a hurry to shut the tv after the game.
