Dude, here is my thesis again. You are arguing something I did not say. I will provide it again for you, as I do not remember discussing it with you before.
Thesis:
All teams who have won the cup (with a couple of caveats explained below) have had the following attributes (forgive me for using caps, just drawing your attention, not yelling):
I. Need for Superstar category
All of them have had AT LEAST ONE player ranked (by any reasonable measure) in the top 5 in AT LEAST ONE of the following positions AT THE START OF THEIR CUP WINNING SEASONS.
1. 1st line center
2. 1st line winger
3. D man.
(please note: goalie (because Crawford was good not great) and defensive forward/Selke nominee (Staal was good not great and the next 2 championship Pens teams did not have a stud there) are not included in this list.
- PT21
You're making the case for us. Again, ignoring other attributes that are just as important if not more important. Defensive forwards and Selke nominees can also be top offensive players and star players. How can you not know this? Goalies are one of the most important players on the team. Teams have won cups with their goalie being the best player. So you're wrong to not include goalies on the list. Proves the point that there is much that you have missed.
II. Lets call this the Exceptions category.
Caveat #1: Blues - Pietro finished #9 in the previous year's Norris. Many guys however would have included him in top 5 because some of the other names were there based on past play/reputation. Lets throw the Blues out.
- PT21
Document this. Or are we just supposed to take your word for it because you made up some fantasy reason to try and justify your premise? The voting is the voting.
Caveat #2: Canes in 2006 had Staal in his 2nd year. He was a tremendous prospect who went #2. However, he was no Crosby and so would not have ranked near the top of the year they won the cup. The previous year was the lockout year, so that was a biased sample.
- PT21
There is much that is wrong here. Staal was a 45 goal, 55 assist 100 point player in his second season. He finished 4th in the Hart trophy voting that year. He packed on another 28 points in 25 playoff games in the playoffs. What are you talking about?

So, i am to believe this team is trying to make the playoffs by playing Gustafson over Ghost and subbing Twarynski and Bunnamen for Linblom and Patrick?
Twarynski is awful. and a painfully slow skater.
I have no clue what this team is trying to do or what message they are trying to send.
Why did they even play Ghost on Monday of the idea was to waive him the next day? |

4. Tanking gives you by far the best odds to land one. - PT21
1.GREAT I have been saying the Hextall-era "half-tank" was time wasted. Look where we are now.
2. I agree completely about tanking. Look at this Sixers team. They have the best player in the league, and a great #2. Haters can go f*** off.
3. Until Embiids 'fragile body' gives out totally? The Process was a success and will be validated THIS YEAR.
You read it here first folks. Expect another parade with tons of red & royal blue.

Tanking is disgusting. No self respecting organization would do that.

And what performance will Bunnaman and Twarynski provide? Everyone knows these guys are stiffs and aren’t NHL players.
Why is Gustafsson playing over Gostisbehere? What does he do better? - PLindbergh31
my thoughts exactly.
The are literally fielding a worse team tonight than the did Monday. |

All I can say is I am glad I didn't bet the Flyers before I read all these roster shenanigans. I did however, bet the over. (6)

I get giving Lindblom and Patrick resets. Players who have gone through physical issues. I give Lindblom a pass. I’ll never criticize him. Coming back to play NHL hockey after having cancer deserves ultimate respect. |

Lindblom and (long overdue) Patrick, I’m fine with. But Gustafson is awful...he plays with his head in the clouds. Ghost has had ups and downs...but Gus has played no where close to as good as Ghost.
Hopefully Lindblom just needs a breather and gets back in quickly. |

III. Lets call this the Draft high category:
In every single year except the years Detroit and Boston won, at least one of the superstars in the Superstar category came from a top 5 pick. Detroit benefited from a legendary scout called Hank Aksell at a time when drafting was not so precise. Boston got their superstar via FA (Chara) - PT21
I am sorry if I did that, can you remind when this exchange started? what was the post I commented on of yours? I am at work and can't seem to find it

Try will provide fresh bodies to push the pace. These arent guys that are going to be replacing Lindblom and NoPa. They are replacing the guys who are moving up.
AV is likely going to use the lines he used Monday so those guys prob wont see much ice time.
As for Gus over Ghost. Does it really matter? They are pretty much interchangeable. I think he was waived to get one of those guys from the taxi squad.
Next game u will likely see all 3 back. |

Same page with this. Actually I’m hoping they keep giving Lindblom a night off every 4-5 games this regular season. He looked way more energized after that last break.

I still don't understand why Ghost played Monday , got waived the next day with the idea he would clear, and then is sent to the taxi squad for Erik f'ing Gustafson. makes zero sense to me.
I wouldn't mind sitting one of Patrick or Lindbolm if they had decent alternatives to step in for them. But they don't. Twarynski can't skate at the NHL level. He just can't.

I remember when everybody thought Boston was dead in the water about 5-6 years ago. Sunsetting veteran core, looked like no standout kids in the pipeline. They had just traded Hamilton because they didn't have enough cap space to sign him, giving them three shots at Barzal, Connor, Chabot, Boeser and TK and somehow they missed them all.
Yet here they are, still standing and competitive. Pasta turned out to be a LOT LOT better than expected. They found McAvoy with a middle-round pick. Their vets still had plenty left to give. That mountain of non-elite depth prospects they were sitting on all broke into the league.
So yeah... what's the opposite of counting chickens before they're hatched? Because that's where the Flyers fanbase is right now. Absolutely zero clue as to what's on the horizon, yet somehow convinced that the team is hopeless. - Tomahawk

Trying to hold on for dear life until they can make moves in the offseason.
At least that’s my hope. I’m not signing up for another year of this poopty roster.
I think Chuck was hoping for a miracle with someone claiming Ghost. It would’ve gave him a lot more options with cap space. Just didn’t work. |

They're not interchangeable. Offensively maybe but not overall. They did not have to waive Gostisbehere to get one of those guys from the taxi squad back.

Doesn't add up. The Flyers can easily be positioned to be able to add a player with a 6M cap hit at the deadline. How many trades are they going to make?
|
|
|
|
And you keep acting like the Flyers have no left leg. Forget where they were actually taken, G and Coots are near the very top of their respective draft classes right now in terms of talent/production/WAR right? Does that not count in your assessment? - Tomahawk
It does for me. Talent trumps draft position. Also actually production and team success trumps preseason positional rankings.

PT21 formula. You have to have a superstar drafted in the top5 because that is the only way to get a superstar player. If you don't have one, you have to tank to get one.
