I believe they can just waive a kid that ain't cutting it if they need the space. I suspect they know where they are with contracts and have a plan. - mohel
You can cut him, but he still has a contract that must be fulfilled. I doubt you can cancel a contract.

That's a cap issue and a payment issue. |

Stan has never forgotten what Daddy told him once - you can never have too many defenceman. |

It's a contract issue, too.
Cut him, send him to Rockfish or the cab, waive him (if he's not claimed) - it's still a professional contract that the Hawks would own, counting toward the 50.
They'd have to move the contract to another NHL team. |

Not to worry, there are some boys going out the door in the next 10 days. Keith to Florida; Kane and ADB to the Leafs to help with their championship run; Toews' contract to Arizona. After that's done Stan can sign a few more Dmen. |

Agree that Stan has a plan and a feel for what will happen, if anything, at the TDL.
He could trade a player for a pick, a player for a player, or be a middleman taking on cap space for a pick. All of which will result in not exceeding the 50 contract limit.
Off season will probably see 2 of Soderberg, Janmark, and Wallmark not extended. Smith, Quenneville and Pirri probably all gone. Brad Morrison and Lindholm possibly not extended unless they are kept to fill out the Hogs' roster. Also someone going in the expansion draft.
That would make up to 8 contract slots available. Hopefully Reichel is signed and brought over. Also maybe the Russian Artur Kayumov. |

Well, Phillips deal apparently doesn’t start until next season, so Stan is is still responsible for only 49.... |

Yeah if it starts now, and good.
That means that unless they trade a rostered guy and some of their cap space for a pick, they stand pat and don't do anything ...rash...like trade the scapegoats I hear about here, lol!
I would love a trade with the Wild where we get one of their two number ones as a switch if theirs is lower than ours, or a second if ours happens to be lower... |

So, if a team signs a kid to a three year ELC and cuts him after one season, he counts toward the 50 the next two years? |

Vegas not top heavy?
Stone $9 mil.
Pieterangelo $8.8 mil.
Fleury and Pacioretty $ 7 mil. each.
$12 million tied up in goaltending.
Have a projected $1 mil. of LTIR to use to improve their roster this year. - LAHawk
What would vegas need to improve their roster that Chicago might have and what from vegas would be willing to trade? |

Per Ben Pope:
Colliton on Ian Mitchell, who has been out of the lineup the past 3 games: "The guys who aren't in, they have to have an urgency to keep improving and do everything they can to prepare for the next opportunity. That's what going to get them ready to succeed."
Colliton strongly implied Kalynuk will play again tomorrow.
"He got a chance and he did well, so he'll get another chance."
Colliton on tomorrow vs. Canes: "We want to try to get more off our breakout...we think there's more out there for us. We've got to execute a little bit, win a few more races, but what we want to capture is the compete level and how hard we defended and kept them to the outside."
Average age is about 22 for the participants in today’s optional Blackhawks practice:
The energy level is like a 15 out of 10, too. Their quarter-ice 3-on-3 game is rowdier and louder than actual games this year.

I couldn't agree more about Mitchell. I'm not knocking him and I think he will still be really good, but he needs to improve before he goes back out.
I'm on record liking Kalynuk's beginning here. I hope he gains some confidence.
I think it is great that a majority of the young guys are busting their arses to compete for a spot and get better.
Don't stray from the path this year. |

What would vegas need to improve their roster that Chicago might have and what from vegas would be willing to trade? - Scott1977
Vegas will not make any significant deadline deals. They are only loosing one player to expansion, after all.
Know this: they have a few promising young players whom are already playing NHL and do not need to be protected. I believe they are reluctant to trade them. The improvements through free agency or otherwise has not cost them any of those kids
Not only do they not wish to trade their own younger players, but also you cannot pick up term where the years remaining on a contract is going to hamstring the process to keep their future salary cap in good order.
You cannot expect a very good dman would become available and would replace the injured Pietrangelo. If any top player was available, is the contract up after this season. Even if it was, I would be against trading picks and top young players. Why is such a player even available? Unless you are talking enigmatic Hamilton. But surely Carolina wants playoff success badly and would not significantly weaken their blueline
Vegas may like to add a veteran goaltender, however, if this can be on the cheap.
They do not like the goaltenders they have in the AHL. Both Fluery and Lehner have injury issues as a concern. Their history to have injuries, not that either is down right now. There are plenty of goaltenders whom could be extracted; the more sought after netminders might be cost prohibitive either in salary retention or too high a draft choice/too good a prospect departure.
LA Hawk would know whether Quick is worth acquiring. I wouldn't expect anything else if even a goaltender add. There is always the possible two for one deal where Vegas is looking to upgrade a position....but with expansion and covid affect on attendance, teams are wary of adding to their salary cap. |
