Now we laugh at that.

But after the 10th year, I'm sure he needed alot of originality for it.

"Isn't this just get the puck to ovie for the one timer?"

"hear me out! Once it's on the ice you'll see it's different. This is 'pass the puck to the half board guy for the one timer! See, the half board guy can be ANY guy!"

So apparently he's never scored a hat trick in the NHL, so the reporter was trying to say that two goals in the game plus the shootout winner is kinda a hat trick.

It was awkwardly worded, but at the end of the day it was a softball question.

Karlsson could have graciously rolled out the cliched bullpoop that every hockey player can say on cue:

"Well, I don't know where it ranks, but I'm just happy to get the win. It's easy to contribute offensively when my teammates are playing well. I'm just looking to contribute."

But know, the pirate had to be an arsehole instead.

I appreciate the pirate for his ego comment. Refreshing.

FROM LAST BLOG

I argued this point last year.....
Very true
All of the buzzards assured me I was wrong
- mr.sir

I would assume this is because the "Take away the pass on a 2 on 1" is what the majority of players have been taught in the past and I would guess most coaches are still teaching?

It's fine to teach something different if your teaching your whole team (especially your goalies) that is what your team is going to do on 2 on 1's. Now if that's not what they will be expected to do if/when they get to higher levels of hockey your doing them a disservice by teaching it to them now.

I'd be interested to hear what coaches in higher levels of hockey are telling players to do on a 2 on 1 including NHL players. Maybe at the NHL level coaches tell the players "your a pro, make a decision based on all the info you have in front of you including who the puck carrier and pass option players are"?

As a goalie I want it to be as simple as it can be, every time regardless of who has the puck on their stick and who the pass option is - I want to focus on the shooter and assume my D man will prevent the pass.

If they get the pass through - desperation time and likely a goal but they beat the D man with likely a very nice/perfect pass and it's a "good goal" and i can live with that.

Leaving the goalie thinking he can't cheat but maybe has to cheat because he isn't sure if his D man is going to force the shot or take away the pass is a recipe for disaster almost every time in my view.

When I got to work.... I asked one of my coworkers, who played at a high level.

Dman should take away the pass, but stay in position. The issue seems to be the dman vacates the center of the ice and moves towards the person without the puck😔
Thus leading to a partial breakaway

A partial breakaway coming from the side allowing the goalie to have to worry about a smaller portion of the net and to come out to cut down the angle.

This is exactly what my coaches taught me when I played. If you cheat too much towards the passee you're giving the shooter/passer too much space to work with.

We can all agree that when it's Mcjesus and Drysaddle that it's even tougher of a play.

Right. Stay in the middle. Take away the pass and take away the shooter's lane to the slot, keeping them to the side.

The counter argument made, and effectively so, is that giving Connor McDavid a lane to the net is the more dangerous option that allowing him to try and pass to Nurse. It's a fair point. I would still prefer to make McDavid shoot from the angle than Nurse shooting from the slot.

I think by the defenseman doing neither, the goalie has no ability to position himself effectively. He has to play the shot from McDavid, and is ill prepared to be ready on the pass across to Nurse - he's deep in the net still.

Regardless, it's 3 on 3, it's overtime and odd man rushes are going to happen. I said to my friend that the OT was going to last until Edmonton got a shot on net.

Wasn't it Rielly trying to defend the 2 on 1? I mean, if it was one of the Leafs better defensemen, maybe it would have been a different outcome?
Or maybe McDavid roofs it past Hutch and we still lose?

That's the thing. You predict the future and I think it still ends up in the back of our net. Let's say Rielly goes down to block the pass across. The options here are: 1) McDavid slides around him, and cuts to the middle and beats Hutch anywhere; 2) McDavid slows up and feathers a pass across to Nurse - same result; 3) Rielly's slide is so effective McDavid takes it around back and scores on the wrap around or the pass out to Draisaitl.

Once Smith made that fantastic save on Matthews . . . it's like pistols at dawn. That was our shot!

Interesting bit on the Habs' remaining schedule, courtesy of the Canucks' blogger:

https://hockeybuzz.com/bl...e-on-Wednesday/194/110687

"Starting Tuesday, the Canadiens are set to play their final 25 games in 43 nights, ending May 11. That schedule includes five back-to-backs, although only one includes travel. And Montreal has already completed 18 of its road games, so they will play 15 times at home and just 10 times on the road, to finish off the year.

By comparison, the Canucks' first 25 games were played over 48 days between Jan. 13 and March 1 — and we know what that did to them. So it'll be interesting to see how the Habs hold up."

Thanks, Carol.

I agree.. Once Smith made that save and the Oilers came back up ice on a 2 on 1 break, led by McDavid, I don't think anyone thought Hutch would make a save. Told the wife the game was over before McDavid even made the pass to Nurse.

The counter-counter argument is that McDavid does McDavid things and you may be damned if you do, damned if you don't. The problem is that in OT players have a lot more ice to work with (3x3) and less chance of defenders beading down on you.

But yeah, tough call!

Leafs slowed right down during their tough stretch.

Habs will have a tough time and its horrible timing for them...injuries will happen before playoffs.
