that's actually a really good idea. Ref's cant see everything, so if its blatant and they miss it, the linesman should have the authority to blow the whistle and call it

What about a call that doesn’t get made, that should have. Does the eye in the sky call down and make a penalty call? What if a goal had been scored, do we wipe it out?

I don't think they'd have the power to make calls, just un-make calls that shouldn't have been made.

I'm not saying it's going to solve everything, but it helps clear up one aspect of the game. If your argument against it is that it isn't going to correct everything, well, then...

Maybe they should eliminate linesman and go to a four ref system. Then the refs could have coaches and a separate bench. They could dress 10 to make sure they keep their shifts short. Instead of a certain guy low and one at the line, ref coaches could devise different systems, R1-R2-R3 for the first guy in etc.

More jobs = progress!

I am assuming they will keep the titles just so that they can assign the certain duties, but I 100% agree that it would be beneficial to give them the ability to make those calls.

well let me be the course correction....

go back to one ref. adding more people making calls just makes those people making more calls to justify their position/authority.

there's always going to be bad or missed calls so get it back to one ref. and makeup calls are more personal psychology than anything else eg i fcuked up so let me try to correct it. but of course the tinfoil hatters will look at it as proof of corruption. it's only a matter of time until they bring up tim donaghy.

if you really want radical: employ 3 linesmen who drop the pucks, break up battles etc. those guys wear ear pieces and a 3 person crew watching the game from wherever and have all available tv angles call the penalties.

I am sure all the officials in the NHL, have at one time or another, had experience as a referee, whether it was a 2 man system or in lower levels as a referee, so it isn't like they don't know how to be referees.

By having the linesman making some calls, it may help eliminate the extra body(2nd referee), on the ice, if it goes well.
It might be something they should try in the AHL and see how it works out.

Still think robots is a better option. Or a series of drones. Maybe with stun guns and they shock you instead of calling a penalty.

The 3 on 3 is somewhat tolerable but I turn off the TV for shootouts.

This referee discussion reminds me of when I was a head referee in a men's league many years ago.
At the time, about 1/4 of the way through the season, the team reps, organizers etc. Had a meeting with myself and wanted more penalty calls and to follow the rule book in its entirety. We warned them what the problem would be in regards to calling every penalty.
Anyways, we did what was directed of us by this group, ultimately their fees paid for us to referee.
It got so bad that the penalty boxes were overflowing, the players were getting 10 minute misconduct whenever they screamed at an official, the minor hooks were called, and it became a general poopshow, with absolutely no flow to the 4 games that were officiated under these circumstances.
Needless to say, the players insisted that we go back to the old system and we never had any problems after that.

Moral of the story, be careful what you wish for.

unless you can provide names and contact information of the players involved so we can contact them or links to newspaper articles/editorials bemoaning the state of men's beer league hockey in your area during that time period, i'm chalking this up to fake news.

Yup, hate them. They may as well call heads or tails 3 times. Or save it for the all star game, which I also don't watch.

I get that. But, for example as its recent, that tripping call on Rous last game. If Short and Garrett can see within the first 7 seconds of a Sportsnet replay that it's not the correct call by any degree – before Rous is even in the box – I'm sure a dedicated off-ice official can just buzz down to the ref and say "That's wrong". That's all it would take, they rescind the penalty, drop the puck at center ice, and go on the way. Doesn't delay the game, no need for a makeup call, no animosity.
- NewYorkNuck

Let's not forget that moments before that, Myers was high sticked and got no call. It was very obvious and the stick even cut him open a good one from cheek to nose.

Well said, I appreciate your attempts at promoting a civil discussion this morning, please for the sanity of others that sit on the sidelines disgusted with the childish comments, keep commenting and don't let the kids chase you away.
