TBs current GM didnt have to draft Hedman, it was 3 gms before him...so what Dubas did wrong is he didnt let Bruke draft the next hedman
- senstroll

Shanny needs to fire Burkie and Nonuts as the former GMs and get someone in between the years 2011 and 2018 that can draft worth a poop

Well, first you trade a 5th round pick to Arizona for Phil Kessel, then you trade Phil Kessel back to Arizona with his $1.2m retained cap hit and a 2nd round pick for the 5th you just sent to Arizona.

Then you trade Kerfoot for Crosby and half retained. Easy peasy!

Controversial opinion (not thought through completely, as per usual): teams should be able to trade retained salary.

(I'm assuming retained salary cannot be moved even if you re-acquired the player)

I agree. Even as a kid I found him creepy. I was always watching, "Take a hint! Leave that cat alone!"

Right?

And, of course, it also quite likely informed my opinion of french dudes going forward.

My view of French people was largely informed by the no holds barred thrashing that the Simpsons gave them between seasons 4 and 7

Well until Le Pew got his white stripe removed/painted over, then all hell breaks loose.

I had actually forgotten about that.

So happy the Simpsons stopped at the height of their powers in Season 10. Can you imagine if they were still pumping out episodes?!

We're letting sub 500 teams into the playoffs now?

On the surface it makes sense. It is something of value that probably should moveable. Especially since it caps out at 50% of a salary, and there are rules on how many retained salaries you can have (I think it was 3?); you probably add some term rules in there to protect GMs from themselves, and it would be doable.

But yeah, I think you're right. Any team who finds themselves saddled with retention issues could make use of this.

Same as you, I haven't thought too much about it - but I guess it could be a cap circumvention tool, or at least one that benefits the rich teams, which is exactly what the cap was trying to prevent . . . At the very least, I would say that it would assist the rich teams in rebuilding faster which is probably unfair - but it's not like all of these teams can't flex their wealth if they want to in order to assist in rebuilding faster (taking on bad contracts, taking on retention options - like the Leafs did with Lehner last year, etc.).

I'm saying that the playoffs are a different beast. This team, as it stands at this exact moment in time, is not built for a grinding playoff run.

If they add some grinding pieces, I think they're in good shape.

I never said the Jets are "better", but I certainly wouldn't bet that the Leafs will have a cakewalk into the 3rd round.

Not sure if you've ever watched playoff hockey before, but whistles tend to go away and games tend to be far more physical and competitive than in the regular season. You should check it out sometime, it's exciting stuff!

- mjones242

So, I still think, based on what we’ve seen so far, that the Leafs win the Division in this exciting, whistles put away hockey. I didn’t say cakewalk but I think they’re the best team in the Division and they’ll win it based on where where things stand right now. Things could change and they could still fall apart but right now, they’re the best and would win it.

You still haven’t said if you think someone beats them. Is there someone who’s shown that they’re better, based on whatever style of hockey you choose?

Let's revisit this after the next three games.

I thought I mentioned WPG somewhere in this (or another?) thread. I'm not calling them out to beat the Leafs but I think they're a team that matches up very favourably against the Buds in a playoff format. Especially, if they upgrade their D-corps for a playoff run. Probably a coin flip.

The Islanders certainly weren't "favourites" last season to make it to the Conference Finals but they did it with an uber-grind, never-quit-for-a-single-shift ethic -- they only sputtered against Tampa who simply had too much talent to be undone (it went 6 though).

Good thing Tampa picked up those truculent pieces though.
