Counterpoint: You need a lot more then to just hit a lottery pick or two to rebuild a team. See Edmonton and Buffalo. A rebuild now isn't going to even likely get you an immediate top pick.

It would be one thing if the team was built to sustain Crosby and Malkin as they age. But it isn't. Many of the key supporting players are almost 30 and need new contracts soon instead of the value ones they have now. (Rust, Dumpulin) They burnt out their prospect pool while those guys were in their prime and I have no regrets about that strategy. (Some moves yes, but not direction)

We at least agree it's time to stop shipping out futures. I'd just try to recoup some more now and then try to find some value UFAs.

- Tojo.

I would give Hex/Burke a chance and see what they do this off-season before saying this team isn't built to sustain Sid and Geno. Ideally I would rather not trade high picks for a forward, hoping we can get that with Petts.

I remember him showing some flashes of skill with the Sens in his rookie season and thinking this kid might turn into something....then he just fizzled haha.

Buddy rode his WJC hype to about 150 more NHL games than his play deserved lol

So then is there a consensus that Hextall is the perfect GM for us right now and/or the future (post crosby)? If given patience to build/rebuild a team?
- joecool2931

For a rebuild yes. For retooling the team to make another run, remains to be seen. Never got the chance.

Because the NHL has no idea what they’re doing.

I'm actually not focused on bottoming out. Maybe that isn't clear. Another generational talent or would be nice, but can't count on that. I just want to restock the system with picks and prospects.
- Tojo.

Which is why you should keep Rust. There are plenty of pieces that can be moved for picks.

Detroit turned Smith, Jurco, and Jensen into 2 2nds and 2 3rds.

That’s the tier you trade away imo.

Buffalo and Edmonton are poor examples. They tried to accelerate their rebuilds and ended up with poop contracts wasting cap space that could go to support players.

Also if you start the rebuild now and get all these late 1st/2nd round type prospects they might end up keeping you in mediocrity for longer and never get to the top 5, top 10 pick range.

I think Hex will take care of that just fine. I even liked that Friedman he grabbed for nothing. Could be a solid 3rd pair guy next year.

Happens all the time. Best thing to do is to judge 18 and 19 year olds based on a 7 game tournament lol.

I just don't think this mess can be turned around that quickly. But they have the rest of the season to change my mind. And from what some of the beat guys are saying, that might be how management is thinking as well.

Same with that Nic Petan, he was good in the tourney and I haven't heard poop about him since.

If we stay healthy and add say Tatar and a third liner
Guentz-Sid-Rust
Tatar-Geno-Kap
Zuck-McCann-xxx
ZAR-Blue-Tanev
Dumo-Tanger
Math-Marino
POJ-Ceci
Players can be juggled but you get the idea. I have Petts gone in this situation, but a separate trade, not for Tatar.

- 668710

The path of least resistance is probably instead of trying to get another third liner to get a 4C, bump Blueger up to 3C, and utilize McCann as a third line wing. This team has quite enough middle six forwards and I really don’t want to spend our limited assets on more of those. Would like to concentrate on hockey trades for legitimate scoring wingers that can continue to be helpful beyond this year and don’t contribute to our logjam of mediocre wingers. I don’t want to send out more assets for player 3LWx and then sit around this offseason wondering how we could possibly upgrade 3LWx who just isn’t cutting it, like what happened with Zucker.

I'd actually like a 1st.

But would you feel different if Rust wanted a big extension?

Or are you just waiting until the deadline? I'm pretty sure you're less confident then I am the team has another run in them as constructed. Could be in a situation where they are too close to trade him and then forced to chose between letting him walk for nothing or signing a bad extension.

I think it happens the most with the depth Canadian players that rack up a few points when they beat Kazakhstan or whoever 9-0 lol.

I mean it's not THAT bad. Geno and Tanger turning it around changes everything. Jarry playing better as well changes things. Matheson is our worst contract. And I think Pettersson can be moved to get a forward. Not that Petts would be my first option to move but you have to give to get. Plus we have way to much tied up in LD money wise.

Zucker can be utilized with Sid and we'd be ok as well. Sully just won't do it. But I agree with you too, we can go that route and have McCann-Blue-Tanev be the third line.

If he wants a big extension you consider moving him at the deadline. You are placing way too much value on a late first imo. Pens are average but they still have enough scoring talent to PDO their way to a cup. So even if that’s a 1% probability take those odds vs just trading Rust for a pick just for the sake of rebuilding.
