I think transparency is a good thing. Sometimes you don't know if your team is just being dumb or calculated. I think more teams should be that transparent about their plans. - Rinosaur
Sure but my point is they get credit for that simply because they win Kakko and Lafreniere. Otherwise they are a mediocre rebuild that spent a poop ton of money on Trouba and Panarin. |

We’re talking about two generational talents that revitalized a franchise that was in danger of being sold and moved. Three years is a small concession to repay continued existence. - Victoro311
So you basically want to go the Detroit route? I don't see the fan base having that type of patience. He isn't nearly as beloved, but Pittsburgh fans are mostly for kicking Roethlisberger to the curb rather than delay a rebuild.
I don't really feel compelled to change your feelings, more just making clear where I'm coming from. |

Totally agree. Go for it until they retire. Once they retire, rebuild. |

It’s almost like you can keep them and try and remain competitive while also moving expiring contracts for assets and keeping your draft picks. |

They gave up core NHL players for not a ton of value. To vics point seeing what they got you might as well wait 3 more years - Feds91Stammer
Three years is nothing. As long as you have a smart organization at the helm you can/should be able to rebuild in a relatively short period of time and three years is nothing. Five years should be enough if you don't have idiots running the team.
All we can hope is that we don't have an organization like the Oilers. They wouldn't have drafted McDavid if they did things right, but at the same time, they're not handling it right with McDavid there now.
I can't wait to see what happens when he pulls a Tavares.

Football rebuilds are entirely different than the nhl lol.
And Detroit’s issue was reupping the Helms and Abdelkaders of the world while also wasting picks on non needle movers at the deadline.
You can keep the generationals and make a concerted effort to build the future up. They aren’t mutually exclusive. |

Tavares struggled with that decision a lot then decided to move back to Canada and play for his childhood team. If the Leafs couldn't fit him he'd still be an Islander IMO. I wouldn't be too quick to assume McDavid will bail on the Oilers, ever. |

Detroit’s been (frank)ed by lottery reform. It’s going to happen to us too whether we start the rebuild next year, in two years, or five seasons from now. My whole point is that the rebuild when it happens is going to be long and arduous. Starting it early isn’t going to make go any faster, it’ll just make Crosby and Malkin move on quicker. With the long rebuild ahead, I want to see Sid and Geno in a Pens sweater for as long as possible and enjoy that time |

Also that contract is gonna be brutal when he’s only putting up 50 points in a few years. |

Yeah but you can’t trade Guentzel like he’s advocating and with the state of our cupboard, you’re probably pigeonholed into keeping rust if you want to limit trading futures moving forward. |

Just that year they got 2 1sts, 2 2nds, 2 prospects that were a 1st and 2nd respectively, and assorted other pieces for McDonaugh, Miller, Nash, and Grabner. We'll see how those turn out, but you need picks to rebuild a system. |

You don’t want a late first a few 2nds and a mediocre prospect for Guentzel? |

Specifically late firsts. And Miller got a better 1st 2 years later lol. |

Bringing up Roethlisberger was a point about the fan base. Pittsburgh is either compete for a title or tear it down. Spoiled fan base, but that's the market.
So should they re-up Rust in your opinion to remain competitive?
And yeah just going to disagree. Whether you want to do it or not, trading vets for picks helps refill the system faster. Doing both is going in between. |

Depends on the trade offers for rust and what he would re-sign for. I definitely don’t think they should let assets expire without getting anything for them. |

You probably shouldn't unpack that much from what I said. Guentzel wouldn't need to be traded immediately. But at some point well before UFA yes I'd explore that. |
