Our offensive system involves a lot of aggressive pinching. The winger chips it past the defenseman and the other two forwards push up for a 2 on 1. The problem is that our defensemen are too predictable going for pinches so teams are exploiting it and punishing us really hard.

Its really hard to tell how much of this is because of the covid situation, the system, the talent level, and also just having an abysmal special teams.

The lack of talent on this team becomes more apparent every game. If you were to rank the top 10 players at each position using just the players in the East Division, I think you could make a strong argument that Blackwood would be the only one to crack the top 10 at his position.

Devils best center this year is Hughes, he's developing nicely this year but i'm still taking (in no particular order) these players before him: Crosby, Malkin, Bergeron, Eichel, Backstrom, Barzal, Couturier, Hayes, Strome, and Giroux.

LW Best Devil Wood or Bratt doesn't matter. I'm still taking: Marchand, JvR, Guentzel, Farabee, Ovechkin, Panarin, Lee, Kreider, Hall, and Vrana.

RW Palms but i'm still taking: Pastrnak, Konecny, Rust, Buchnevich, Reinhart, Voracek, Oshie, Eberle, Kapanen and heck maybe even Tom Wilson.

D Devils Severson or Smith i think you can argue they break the top 10. Others in the division: McAvoy, Carlson, Letang, Fox, Leddy, Provorov, Chara, Pulock, then maybe Pelech or Dahlin.

And goalies I'm putting Blackwood behind at least Varlamov, Shesterkin, and Halak.

And this is just looking inside the East, you throw in the other 3 divisions, especially upfront and it looks like the Devils will be in the wilderness for a while.

this is true, but it needs to remain understood that we're in the middle of a rebuild. Prospects are getting regular ice time and are in their 1st or 2nd seasons. The only vets up front are Palmieri and Zajac.. and then there's Zacha, Wood and Nico who are also very young. The back end is what it is. We have some plugs for the time being as we wait for our D prospects to develop.

Hughes, Smith, Hischier, Holtz, SHOULD be top 10 at their position in the east. We're hoping Foote and Mercer can be just behind them or surpass. Zacha rounding the corner for real would also be a gift. We should get a nice pick in this draft too.
At some point they WILL buy and start adding established talent, but that day is not and should not be today.

Trade deadline is 5 weeks away, April 12th. Should be interesting. SUCH a downer everyone we could sell isn't producing right now. Gotta hope they can turn it around, but I can't imagine it's easy with the compressed schedule. They have no time to refocus and regroup. I think a compressed schedule makes it that much easier to ride streaks or get stuck in losing patterns.
