It's because the shootout is stupid and the shootout will always be stupid. In basketball do they have a free throw off to decide the winner? In Football do they have a field goal-off to decide the winner?

I'm fine with this approach if they play OT until there's a winner.

The wife and I didn't drive to work for 3 months and the insurance company sent me a bill saying I was under quoted.
In a time when a lot of companies were giving rebates.
I never paid it and am now switching companies.

I know the problem . . . but the shootout isn't the answer. There have been a number of lazy answers in the NHL. My favourite example:

Goalies leaving their net and acting like a skater to handle the puck makes it harder to generate offense.

Obvious solution: Treat a roaming goalie outside of the extended crease like a skater; they may not close their hand on the puck, they may be legally hit, and they may be called for interference.

Solution chosen: Paint a trapezoid in the corners of the ice and tell goalies that they can't simultaneously stand in and play the puck in the trapezoid, but they can stand out of the trapezoid and and handle the puck in the trapezoid, or stand in the trapezoid and handle the puck outside of the trapezoid.

Reason: When the goalie is hit it creates on-ice mayhem, bench clearing brawls and other problems.

Ignoring the fact that leaving the bench is an automatic 10 game suspension; there is an instigator rule for starting a fight; you still wouldn't be able to hit the goalie illegally (from behind; charging, etc.).

I'll get off my soap box now, but I'm going to kick it over on the way down.

Did you know that Benning called a presser tomorrow at like noon? Just because.

I wonder if he is stepping down or saying they are selling all UFAs and begging someone to take myers

Ferraro has a good idea. Reverse the trapezoid. Make it so the goalie can go into the corners and get it but can't stop it from behind so teams can wire it around the boards if they wish.

I like the idea.

It's better than what they have, I'll give him that. It's not for me, per se.

I find this idea of you can't skate here or you can't play the puck in this magic area is just . . . silly. The game is intended to be fluid and fast. Adding in rules about who can and can't play pucks in some areas is counter intuitive.

Like . . .I think about teaching the game to new people, and I think how easy it was for me to learn this game in 1976 or 1977 when I was just 6 or 7. It is far more convoluted now, and there are rules that when someone new to the game asks, "Why is that a rule? Are pucks that expensive?" "Why is that a rule? Are the corners dangerous for goalies?" "Why is that a rule? Is playing defense problematic?" Sorry I made the last one up 'cos I'm old and grumpy, but the first 2 are examples of questions my kids asked me.

I contrast that with me learning lacrosse when I was around 30 and going to games and struggling to get the rules down because they were so inconsistently applied that even though I had season tickets and was going to all the games, I still didn't know the rules very well after about 4 years . . . and I'm a fan who WANTS to know the rules. Casual fans don't stand a chance. I feel hockey is getting there.

Like, puck over the glass is a simple rule, but it's nonsensical.

If they want to have the puck over the glass rule really be a thing, extend the glass another 40 feet so it's not happening all the time. There are ways to make the game better and prevent some of these problems without creating problems from the solutions.

Networks hate OT which is why they got rid of it.

It would be a dream to have infinite OT back though

The puck over glass rule is one of the dumb ones but it's also one of the ones they call consistently no matter what so what is a guy to do

I was always fine with 60 minute games in the regular season. Save the overtimes for the playoffs. If teams get 20 plus ties then so be it. Teams used to play for ties. Now they play for the guaranteed point.

I mean I get it and understand.

Some of those rules were to keep the pace going. Brodeur and Hextall handled the puck so often in the corners it was a 3rd defense so they got rid of it.

Brodeur was better at handling the puck than most defensemen were.

Unfortunately its necessary, as goalies used to shoot the puck over the glass on purpose to stop the play.

I actually don't mind it that much tbh.

Keeps the game going, makes the defense play controlled instead of house league
