Matthews is definitely the better all around player.
- gergeswillems

Matthews 5 on 5 numbers, Goals, points, hitting shots taken, takeaways puts him far ahead of anyone in the NHL. He's just a dominant beast.

Mathhews is litterally the best 5 on 5 player in 30 years.

He took a position long ago that hiring Keefe was a terrible decision so now he has to perform Olympic level mental gymnastics to convince himself that he's right. We've all seen it here before with numerous topics hockey and non hockey related. Same poop different pile.

I could say the opposite. If Dubas wins the Jack Adams award you'll be crowing about it. But when Lou won it you were so triggered that you likely couldn't even brush your teeth from your hands shaking so much.

Isn't the jack adams for coach of the year?

Oops. My bad. I don't think there's a name for GM of the year? The Mike Milbury trophy? 🤣

The Oilers are the highest scoring team in the league!

Oh wait, they were the highest scoring team in the league until they played the Leafs three times in a row.

Anyone want to guess which team leads the league now?

Kyle Dubas signed Thornton, Spezza, Bogosian and Simmonds for 3.9 combined LOL. No team has depth that good for close to that cap hit. This is why that 4 players 40 million narrative was (frank)ing garbage and lazy.

Probably true. Jack Adams is coaching by the way. Jim Gregory is GM.

In fairness, I don't particularly like what I see in NYI. I do'nt think he's set the team up well for the future. They look like a middling team without much room to improve.

But they've been doing alright. In my opinion though, that's Trotz. He's arguably the best coach in the NHL imo. That's really been the only significantly smart thing LouLam has done.

Judging by the lack of hair I'd have to say the rug doesn't match the drapes. Maybe there is no rug at all.

I'm not saying we've locked up a playoff spot, but...

If the Leafs go 16-16-0 over the rest of the season, the Flames would have to go 24-9-1 to beat us out for the final playoff spot.

Easy. HEM line. That is an outstanding third line.

somebody suggested the "ZIP" line yesterday ... think that's better than HEM.

What-the-ever-loving-(frank)-is-that?

Jesus!

I don't know if they've adjusted teaching methodology for math in Europe (I would guess it's probably country-by-country). They have a new way to teach kids multiplication that is cumbersome and awkward.

In some ways what it does it teach you the roundabout way to do multiplication in your head by grouping common numbers that you know how to multiply, and then add up the results . . .so you know, the way we were taught: 84x26, you would multiply 84*6, and then multiply 84*2 after first adding the 0 in the ones column and summing the results:

84
26
--
504
1680
----
2184

The new way is more convoluted. It's about decomposition, so you break that into:

80 x 20 = 1600
80 x 6 = 480
20 x 4 = 80
4 x 6 = 24

1600 + 480 + 80 + 24 = 2184

As a parent who was not taught the new way, whenever I watch my kids doing it I want to rip the pencil out of their hand and scold them!

- Monkeypunk

37 + 24 + 19 = 82

The Buzztron

I didn't like the Vesey signing. But Dubas had a great off season. There's no question about that.

.
sportsclubstats already has the Leafs at 100%. Basically, statistically there is no conceivable way the Leafs miss the playoffs

Buzztron would say the Leafs will win the President's trophy but will miss the playoffs by 1 point while the Red Wings make it.

Youre right about the playoffs so we will see when we get there.

In the meantime its a fun ride. We can also say that Boston hasn't played the leafs this year and there's no idea how they would handle the leafs either.

- Aaron_85

I agree. I think the Leafs are just playing that much better. North opponents who are playing them are commenting on it. Most recently, Tyson Barrie said, "They are playing like we wanted to last year."

Boston, Tampa, Vegas, Colorado and Carolina are often mentioned as being top tier teams. I don't know if Carolina fits into that bucket as well as the other 3, but I love the way they play.

Last year Boston had a .714 winning percentage, which is probably in the top-40 of all time winning percentages in the NHL. This year they're .675 -- and I will say that they play in a division where I think 5 of the 8 teams on any given day have a reasonable expectation of winning.

Tampa had a .657. Good, but nothing fancy. In the annals of history, no one talks about a .657 team for their regular season performance unless it was highly unusual ("and they did in running shoes!"). This year they're .775 -- and I think in their division there are 4 teams who have a reasonable expectation of winning (whether Dallas is or isn't, they should still be considered to have a reasonable expectation of winning).

Vegas had a .606. Colorado had a .657 in a different division and were 2nd. That .606 would have made them a wild card team in the Metro Division. Anyway, this year Vegas is rocking a .763 and the Avs are .625. That division probably has 3 teams that should be considered to have a reasonable expectation of winning (including St. Louis).

The Leafs were good after Keefe took over with a .628, but nothing super and of course this year they are at .792. The problem I have is that when I look at the North, I think on any given night Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal or Winnipeg has a reasonable expectation of winning. In fact I would have also thought Vancouver would as well, but their goaltending has been so remarkably inconsistent and their style is to trade High Danger chances, but without Markstrom their getting killed doing it.

The competition for most of these teams can be pretty hard regardless.

We won't know until we see them play obviously, but while I think Boston's division is the hardest, and Tampa is still de facto the best team, the Leafs should not be excluded from that conversation.
