I like where the Leafs are at and not huge on whataboutism but I think the Leafs would be better minus Nylander and Plus Pietrangelo on the top pair. - TheMussel
That's where the great debates spawns the other debates. He went for $8.8m x 7 and is 31. Do you want a defenseman making $9m against the cap when he's 38? Maybe if he'd have come for 4-5 years it would have been better, but I think the term sold him. I think the term would have (or should have) scared us.
So, for the sake of argument - you trade Nylander ($7m), don't sign Brodie ($5m -- btw, his deal ends when he's 34), and instead sign Pietrangelo to an $8.8 x7 deal. You have $3.2m to find a winger who can slot top-9 to replace Nylander. Maybe they look at Granlund ($3.75), maybe Duclair ($1.7), Haula ($1.75) -- or maybe you just keep Kapanen or Johnsson who were making that much.
The defense is better, I think that's a no-brainer. At some point the offense will start to suffer if you lose too many diversified weapons. Love him or hate him (and I think most recognize Willy's strengths and weaknesses), Willy is someone who can excel if the opposition's defense isn't strong on him.
The unknown to me in that equation is: Is Pietrangelo so much better than Brodie that it would negate Nylander's value over someone like Johnsson or Kapanen? Or are they close enough that the risk in term on Pietrangelo outweighed the move. |

I've been sinking all of my spare time into playing Diablo 3 and reading self help books lately.

I agree about Pietrangelo's value at age 38 but the Leafs are very much in a win now window. I would consider the last 4 years of his contract as part of the price that has to be paid to get him. It basically has to happen before Matthews' contract is up in case he doesn't want to come back.
And when it comes down to it, even if Pietrangelo is only say, 25% better than Brodie (at the risk of adding an arbitrary relative quantification), the true value is the peak talent that you can put on the ice during crucial game situations. Pietrangelo as one of 6 d-men on the Leafs, marginal improvement. Pietrangelo over Brodie during the last 3 minutes of a 1 goal game, notable improvement.
It's a little bit like the whole "the winner of the trade is the team that gets the best player" idiom. |

I haven't played Diablo 3 in a long while. I find every time I start playing it, I always go down the Rabbit hole with it and play it nonstop for way too long.
Same with Skyrim. |

I'm a PoE guy so Diablo 3 is a bit fresh (haven't played it since before 2.0), and can play couch coop on the PS4. I'm sure the novelty will run out soon since acquiring gear and making good builds is super easy.
PoE consumes me and all of my toughts and time whenever I start a new league though. |

you need to watch Idiocracy .. a movie from 2004-05 or so.
humanity is not getting smarter, far from it... evolution (for humans) has stopped.
it is true that many things are changing and changing much more rapidly than people are accustomed to.... question is are they changing for the better - or just changing. I do understand that for some people who view the world thru the lens of their phones... that it is a little challenging to get perspective. - BorjeFan4Ever

I haven't actually played that game. I just got back into Xbox at the beginning of the pandemic and I've spent most of my time playing FPS's, mostly Warzone.
My brother played that game and told me it was good, though.
And my friends all say I should play Ghost of Tsushima. |

If I was a GM, I'd have a rule about no guy on the team over the age of 33 making more than $6M a year.
Those numbers can be adjusted after looking at graphs and spreadsheets and poop, but seriously, there should be a line which shouldn't be crossed.
How many contracts to superstars after the age of 27 have worked out well?
People laugh at Dubas for giving Matthews and Marner huge contracts, but at least he's paying for them during their most productive years.
Tavares was a mistake.
Karlsson was a mistake.
Parise was a mistake.
I could go on and on and on... |

Not if we win a cup...
If we don't, sure you could call it a mistake. (Unless he can be dumped later in the contract due to the actual $$$ owed going down)

Finished Witcher 3 a month ago - but I probably didn't even do 25% of the side quests, maybe more. It took months. I've never played anything as in-depth (although to the prior post, I kept running into crash issues in Skyrim, so I never got immersed in it). |

It's a bit like Golf. A simple ol' college try won't suffice if you want to have any kind of success at it. Requires a good bit of commitment to get to the fun parts.... be forewarned. |

I never actually finished the main story in Skyrim. I just did my own poop.
I killed some bandit ass in a cave at one point and ended up ruining the rest of the game though, since he didn't respawn and I couldn't do the quest.
That, and the game crashing, was why I stopped playing the last time I played. |
