So then it’s ok with you that Treliving has built team marshmallow because the othe Canadian teams are just as soft?
Mentally or physically soft is still soft.
There are also lots of junior players that play for team canada that turn out to be great players and to dismiss any prospect before we know what we got is crazy. Flames management may already know what they have in Peltitier and Zary but that’s the same team that has put this team together.
Not saying that they can’t right the ship and go on a run but before I would want to mortgage anymore futures I’d take the show me approach. I’ve been disappointed more than once.

It's not dismissing anyone. Like I said, they're good prospects. It'll take something of value to get someone like Forsberg. There's also very little chance that they're budding superstars, and the new GM can just flip Forsberg for a similar prospect next year if it doesn't work out. Treliving isn't getting the chance to rebuild the team again and adding Forsberg is probably the best chance he has at making things work if he's allowed to do anything.

It's a moot point anyway since Nashville is almost guaranteed to get a much better offer than grumpy Bennett, an expiring contract, and a decent prospect.

The Leafs were paying Kessel to win a cup for Pittsburgh when they were tanking for Matthews.

Right... not sure what bearing that has on this conversation though... they were a sinking ship with or without him that year. They were awful.

The Maple Leafs example is not one that other teams should try to emulate is my point. If your window isn't open, you should be in pick acquisition mode. The Sharks bungle/misread on their franchise is proof of that.

While I don't think Forsberg makes the Flames an instant Cup contender, it certainly makes them better. Just, in my opinion, not a top 3 pick better. They have to lottery protect the pick(s).

Who should they emulate? In the past decade, there's one team who won the cup without building around a string of high picks. It's real hard to get those picks without bungling everything up.

Things would be a lot different if the Flames had top three picks during the years they were bad for this rebuild.

Don’t get me wrong, Forsberg a great player and would definitely add and improve this team today, I would rather see a player trade than dumping cost controlled assets to get him. I just think adding 1 player will not improve the other problems that plague this team. There’s something stinky in that dressing room that isn’t going away and that’s where Treliving should be focusing his energy. Who knows maybe that’s what he’s really up to.
Just my opinion, no facts or insights to actually know what’s up with the team.

I thought maybe Brady would go after someone on the team that might not be seeing the game the same way as Chucky.

I think we're ships passing in the wind on this... my point is the Flames should protect their 1st rounders no matter what in the event that they are a lottery team. They should not move a 1st rounder for Forsberg. If they want to move a lower ceiling guy (Zary/Pelletier/Dube), fine.

Let someone else make a mistake and move an unprotected 1st for him.

It's not all that much. Bennett wants out and won't be back next year, Ryan is zero value, Zary and Pelletier are good, not great prospects. There's also almost no chance the pick is a lottery pick if they're upgrading from Bennett to Forsberg. They'd also have Forsberg for another year and be in a position to recoup pretty much everything next year at the deadline if it's not working out.

He's the best player available. Going to have to give up something to get him.

If Benny Ryan and Zary get it done I do that deal all day.

Flames have never had a top 3 pick, and just because you do, you still have to make the right choice.

That’s the problem Benny has a little trade value but I don’t see Ryan having any unless it’s insurance for a contender. Nobody wants our garbage for a Forsberg type player. A guy can only dream though

You bring up the Leafs and Sharks, but those 1sts also turn into Poiriers and Klimchuks.

If the only thing of value they have to give up to get at least a year and a half of Forsberg, you make that deal before they have a chance to hang up the phone. It also gives them a leg up on resigning him. I'd agree with you if they were bringing him in for two months, but he could be a long-term solution.

It's still probably in the Flames' favour if it's Zary and the pick. Find a way to get Gio to Seattle and most of the problems are solved.

There's also the matter that the deadline isn't for another month and the Flames will have a better idea if the team is worth improving or not by then.

Totally. I get it, and I do think if you evaluate the ceiling of your pick/prospect to be of lesser value than the guy you're acquiring, you make the move. Also agree that Gio moving on would be best for the team (he or Looch)

Draft picks are tricky. They are easy to over value and under value.

Since the Leafs are being used above. Nylander, Matthews and Marner, could have very easily have been a lot worse if not for some luck with ping pong balls, and different picks by teams in front of them.

Nylander could have very easily have been Virtanen or Dal Collie. Marner could have easily been Dylan Strome if Arizona picked Marner or Hanifin ( I know I lot of leafs fans were hoping the Strome drop to them and were worried about Marners size). Finally Matthews for not the luck of ping pong balls, could have been Jesse Puljujarvi.

At the same time, people throwing the picks away because they will not be lottery picks. In the same drafts, if picking after the 15th pick, you could have had Pastrnak, Barzal or Connor, and Chychrun.

I would think the only thing getting us Forsburgh would be Monahan

Bad pass by Lucic but...

Bennett of course can't corral it.

Backchecks lazily.

His man scores because he is a POS.

Get this guy off our team already.
