I'll admit whenever I see Bogosian pinching into the play, creeping into the slot, or coming down the wall to the corner, I also find it perplexing for the same reason. If I honestly had to guess . . . here's a floater of a thought: I think it's adaptation to Keefe's system. When the Leafs get their outside cycle moving with the 3rd Forward high, it's a beautiful thing to watch, but it works best when the D are also active. A friend of mine who's an Oilers fan talks about how awesome that is to watch, since it stretches the other team out so far, exhausts them, and the Leafs move the puck around for great looks with far more exciting and high chance opportunities than your standard wall-based cycle.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but when I picture the Leafs moving that cycle, it often seems to cycle from the right side, so the RD would be the first in. One possibility here is that they are stronger or more aggressive on the right side, so Marner and Nylander are more apt to end up behind the net, requiring right-side support from the point.
