I was raised in a family full of people who argued or needed to be persuasive for a living and was taught that if you approach a debate with facts you can convince anybody who isn't willfully ignorant. Sometimes I take it too far but I'm also aware I'm not always right and not always open to a good argument that goes contrary to me so I'm open to the idea that it goes both ways.
