As in, you find out your great great grandfather had 4 kids, 1 moved to Botswana a hundred years ago and there's an entire chunk of family on the other side of the world you didn't know about. Or something like that.

Its the same concept as the family tree stuff on ancestry except its basically built for you by DNA results.

The highlights so far:

My dad's grandmother was married twice. I'm assuming it was a death. The only details we have of the 1st husband is his last name, and they had a couple of kids together. Then she remarried, and they had my grandmother.

There's a branch of my mom's side that moved to the US in the 1870s.

My mom's side is less Scottish than we had been led to believe.

A great grandmother has a grave in Stayner that's about the ugliest tombstone I have ever seen. I may visit it this weekend.

I didn't quite hear the story 100%, but I think my brother said that the initial results said we were 0.5% Ashkenazi Jewish, but then they sent him another letter saying that was a mistake - no trace.

Yeah, kinda disappointing.

Seeing the actual records is kind of cool. I have no idea how my sister did all the research pre Ancestry for my mom’s book. The stuff about my grandfather obviously we knew, but she went back a long way. She said that the name Freeland came from when Cromwell gifted land. It’s quite possible she made it all up.
