Agreed. I think the Cap is going to mean the only real choices are an inexpensive partner for Campbell or a trade for young affordable guy.

I have them with about 8 million to re-sign Hyman and Goalie. A goalie for 3 million or less gives you Hyman and maybe some more flexibility to tweak.

I don’t think Hyman is going anywhere. He honestly doesn’t need the cash, and he has a pretty sweet thing happening with this team. JMO.

Speaking of whiffs, the only part of the game I saw last night was the tail end of the third, Vesey carrying the puck into the oz, fanning on the shot, over to Kerfoot who completely fanned on the shot and the Sens broke the other way, with Kerplunk stumbling all over the place. I rechecked the score a couple times to make sure it was right.
For those 2 guys, I have some advice. It doesn’t matter how good you are, it’s about how good you look.

Yes, but SN talked about this ....KD had made both contracts so that they could be exposed.

I was unaware of this - thank you. That's a small amount of cleverly worked protection. Hopefully unnecessary, but it's good to have.

It's why all roads lead back to Nylander. You can't trade Tavares. You'd never trade Matthews. Marner makes $10.9m and Nylander makes $6.9m, so the cap flexibility you get from moving Marner is appealing (you'd have $15.9 to work with, so you COULD sign both Hamilton and Rielly in that theoretical situation), but I think you get a lot more from Marner than you do from Willy. When Willy is at his best, he's a great player to have. He's a great skater, has a good shot, can be a game breaker and so on. When Marner is at his best, he's better. Over the past 3 years (ignoring the half year where Willy was here in name only), I would say that Marner is still more frequently at his best than Willy is.

So if you have to move a forward for cap space, all roads lead back to Nylander.

they do, but only because it is easier for teams to take on a 6.9M cap hit than to take on an $11M cap hit. The return won't be as good but it would free up cap space..

Is the general consensus around here that Hyman is a $5m player? He's an asset, but I don't think he should be more than $4m.

If Hyman re-signs for under $4M that is a huge win for the Leafs

Ya, if he's good about the $$ then I think it'll get done.

Quite the read on Donald Brashear in the Athletic today, would recommend.

30 beers a day on top of the drugs. Hard to believe that dude is still alive, quite the ride the poor guy has had.

So we’re turning to a 29 year old with 66 NHL games? I like Campbell but I haven’t seen enough for that yet

Spatso also thinks Zaitsev would be a good pickup for Seattle in the expansion draft

- Archaic

There's not a lot to actually select from Ottawa, so they could do worse.

I think those are probably the goal posts ..4-5 per year. Maybe some trade protection and some longer term gets him down to 4'ish.

finally we're agreeing on something.
Campbell is fine in a McElhinney role - but nothing more than that imo.

Leafs need a starter.

btw good to see that Leafs management adapted the 3 goalie option (not a lot of you on here agreed with me as that being a good option to give Andersen rest when I suggested that on here before this season..)

I'm a bit puzzled by the author thinking that the Leafs would protect Joey Anderson in the draft.

I honestly have no idea who he even is.

Me neither ..but you can't hide from the Cap.

Unless you let Hyman walk, trade Willie, or expose Muzzin to the exp draft you're left with saving money in Net.

Trade some young assets/picks for a talented young goalie making less than 3.

And the hypo was to add a partner for Campbell not to make him the #1.

That expansion link you shared is very interesting...all those moving parts thought well in advance. Funny reading about Holl in that article and seeing where he currently sits on this team with regard to value.
I will always contend, there is no replacement for intelligence in this game, on the ice and off. Dubas takes a boatload of flack for being “smart”, but what if he really is that smart? Shanny does what all good managers do...surround yourself with brilliant people.
I trust these guys, which is a blessing (to me). I don’t second guess a thing these guys do, which relieves a lot of unwarranted fan frustration and negative energy.

over the last 3 seasons (regular games), Hyman only has 12 points less than Nylander.
He has 3 more goals as well than Nylander.
Nylander has 20 more PPP (29vs9).
Hyman has more TOI/G (1:20 per game), but most of that is surely linked to Hyman's PK time.
Shot percentage 15% vs 11%.

Hyman is a +38 (second on the team after Marner), while Willie is a -5.

Kerfoot's AAV is 3.5mln.

There are plenty of reasons why Hyman's agent should start with a 5y @6.5mln AAV contract demand.
Anything below 5.5mln AAV for Hyman is a bargain.

I'd protect 4 D as it stands right now.

Mikheyev is exempt.

So bye Kerfoot? He can be replaced in FA or through trade. No need to waste assets on making a deal with Seattle.

Makes sense unless your dealing future forwards (and I'm not saying I would do this) but someone like Robertson I'm sure is intriguing and appealing to many teams.

Holy chit I just looked at the career #'s for Hamilton and Rielly - outside of the offensive stats (and I don't think you are giving up much and besides that the Leafs can afford less Offense from the Blue line. They just need guys who can hold the line and be very effective at breaking out of their own end and obviously being strong defensively.

One of these 2 players is a career -39
The other is a +58the

Wow.

- Cush29

I like the +/- stat, but it can be misapplied which you have clearly done here. Rielly's minus stats came in the seasons 2013-14 to 2016-17 which were seasons where he played for a team that was dreadful. He is a plus player since despite playing more PP minutes than any other d-man and not being on the PK. Hamilton hasn't played for a last place club ever.
