Awesome dude. I told the story here a month or more ago but played in a celebrity charity tourney where you draft a former pro. We drafted Vaive and he was nothing short of fantastic.

Hung out with us all all day, before / after and between games, told stories, spoke about his personal life etc. Took as many pics and signed anything and everything anyone wanted - Christ he was asking the shy guys “hey bud anything I can sign for ya”.

Funny as anything - I’m a goalie. He shakes my hand, says “hey I’m Rick, once we hit the ice you won’t see me until we are off the ice”. Everyone howled - him the hardest.

Alas, gave it to a friend.

Throwback to what I was referring to earlier today - watching when we were kids. You'd get Peter Puck animated cartoons at the intermission coming on and explaining offside, icing, hooking, slashing, and so on. You could learn the rules of the game just by watching a few Saturday nights. The colour guys taught the game as it went along.

Now the colour guys lie to you directly ("Well, that was obviously hooking." No Ray, it wasn't, and you know it.), which would mislead and confuse any young fans - they'd never learn anything about the game.

So this would be about 10 years ago, but I got a tour of the ACC before a Leafs game (I was the season ticket holder of the game).

They took me through the press box, I chatted with Joe Bowen, and I asked about the "real time stats" - they basically told me that they pay a student $50 a game to take them. There's absolutely no league-wide standard, there's no training, it's just "hey, keep track of hits and stuff."

I can confirm this. I was upstairs doing exactly this, and for the life of me I can't remember what game. My friend used to do this, when he was a sports something or other major, and the other guy called in sick so he was able to get me in to help out. I was keeping track of who took shots on goal
