Say what you want about the way Jim Rutherford dealt with Evgeni Malkin, but when he put a fire under Malkin it worked. Right now there isn't even a little trace of smoke and it shows in Malkin's performance. I don't buy that a guy who makes 9.5 million dollars a year can't find a way to keep in shape. A Peloton subscription and some gym equipment doesn't cost that much for a guy who has made $100 million playing hockey..

No way I’m subscribing to the logic of trade rumors when GMJR was in town having any impact on Genos performance.

In other words, we need Torts in here as the HC.

If letang is traded, what are you really getting for him?
A couple of 2nd round picks that may or may not pan out? A mediocre rookie? Is that enough?
You would be taking the only defender that can create offence. The one that plays top minutes vs top players. And he’s playing with a rookie. Sure he isn’t playing great. But you have literally nothing. You can have POJ play top minutes. You can dream of Ufas in summer, but that certainly won’t help you now, and that is a gamble.
So moving letang is by far a very silly move, even if you want to throw the towel and rebuild.
Rather try to pry another top 4 dman, thus limiting his ice time.

Neither Malkin nor Letang are living up to their salary. If there are offers not eh table you explore them. I think they have full NTC, tell them look, its not working here where would you want to go if we can work out a trade. Its a business. Theres no point in keeping aging players around for memory lane. Gretzky, Brady, Manning, Montana, Hull, just off the top of my head are all greats...they moved on at the end of their careers. The bottom line is its a business. If there is a trade to make the team better and go deeper you do it.

We had a dude on our sales team that had some of the best years of anyone. Good solid dude, always fun at the annual meetings. Last 2 years wasn't cutting it and had to let him go. Put a new guy in his territory and its back to where it was.

I would tread lightly with Geno and Letang and more so Geno because moving them certainly tarnishes legacies. Fedorov which was a way different scenario doesn’t even have his number retired because of his Detroit legacy being tarnished.

Agree, and Mario supposedly still regrets how things went with Jagr. That hangs over what happens with Malkin and possibly Letang.

Sidenote sorta, but has anyone actually heard that Letang wants to retire as a Penguin. I've read that plenty with Malkin and Crosby, but I can't recall anything about Letang or someone close to him saying that.

Mario is also the only owner that knows the player side of this. Get what ur saying, but it’s obviously important to him to right by the players that brought success to the franchise.

Montreal will pay a premium for Letang because he’s French.
Montreal think they’re a contender, every minute Letang isn’t traded to The Canadiens is a travesty

I don't think the issues with Malkin are serious. All he needs is more time to practice with his line. His line keeps changing. And Zucker isn't doing anything on his line right now. When Malkin sets up Zucker with a perfect pass and Zucker fails to capitalize whose fault is that? Having said that, Malkin does need to shoot more, especially since his linemates are not scoring.

Letang is another matter, though.

But Letang is not a RD. He is the opposite of volleyball's "libero". IWO, Letang does what Letang wants.

The Cup run in 15/16 where Letang had to play on Daley’s left for a bit before Daley got injured out disproves this theory.

My problem with Letang is his positioning and discipline. It's like he never truly trusts his partner, so he overcommits to the other side and that's when the trouble starts.

Yeah but Burkle owns more than Mario and wasn't Mario considering selling at some point?

None of us know what the players want...we do know the owners want to make $$$. And if they miss the playoffs too many times or players aren't pulling their salary they aren't staying around.

Unrightfully so and this is why he thinks Tatar is obtainable. He also loves Tatar and has been suggesting him for years hahah.

I'd like to get him.

He suggests Tatar coming here as much as EK use to say Hemsky was coming to the pens lol 🤣

Letang is MAF category if you ask me. He won't retire here. I'm still on the trade Letang in the off-season and sign Hamilton.

If you can do that you definitely do it. I think it’ll be tough clearing the cap space for it and for whatever reason big ticket UFAs never come here.

But do we even try to go after them? What was the last reported big ticket UFA we went after?

Parise and Suter? Has there been a big push after those two? I feel like we never really have the cap for it so that might explain things.

But apart from the real big fish, I feel like we don't get the medium fish that we can fit under the cap either. Maybe that's a matter of not pursuing them, but it feels like we're never in the running for the best guys at the cap hit we can actually afford. Last time I felt like we got "the guy" was when we got Eric Fehr.

Oh yeah I forgot about those 2. That was Shero still, right? That was a while ago. Thank god that didn't happen.
