you said she is actually better with more points in less ice time
- Symba007

Come on dude I said he's producing at a higher rate, that's not saying he's a better player.

The point was that writing a hit piece on him right now is idiotic. He's producing and the team is winning. Why would you be trying to slander the guy when the real issue is guys like Rielly?

Not lately.

And if Nylander is producing and Rielly is the problem, then why does Rielly have more points?

6 of his 12 pts came from 2 games, that means he has 6pts in the other 14 games.

- Arctic_AARDVARK

Because Rielly is SUPPOSED to be able to defend, and he can't.

You're right that it's been 5 games since Nylander had a point though. Not the end of the world but it's a long stretch for him.

Most of his pts come from non important goals anyways..

And its never been an issue with how many points he gets in a season, its everything else. He makes too much money to be that inconsistent and do literally nothing else well.

Fwiw Willy is supposed to be able to play some defense too.

He makes 4.5mil more than Hyman, and clearly Hyman brings more to the table than he does. If you get paid the big bucks, you have to be more than a pretty face.

Team depth is junk to the point where they decided trading for Galchenyuk was a good idea and you're worried about (frank)ing Nylander.

Team depth is (actually fine) not as good as it could be because we overpay guys like Nylander.

Bogosian?
Mikheyev has 4 points. Vesey?! Barabanov? Engvall?

The supporting cast is rough.

Crosby competes every game.

It's not, nor has ever been about straight points.

Also, Willy plays with an elite C, Sid usually gets to play with some nobody..

- Arctic_AARDVARK

If Willy's "elite C" was playing tolerably this would be a fair statement. Willy has not been great, but he has actually been better than Tavares for the most part. Willy carries the puck, he gets a couple of decent scoring chances per game. He literally wins some battles for the puck. He back checks. Not how we'd all like, but he does. He's still the king of the floater stick lift with no body position or physical involvement, but he's doing _something_. He also does take shifts off, and it's infuriating, so there's no denying that, either. That said, his "elite C" hasn't been doing much beneficial either, so don't use him as a reason to think Nylander should be doing more. He's not getting much help from his "elite C".

I'm still not sure what the expectations are for Nylander from those who hate him. He's not a physical player and he's not a superstar, but he is a very good player who just scored 30 goals and makes less than $7m.

Spezza, Kerfoot, and Mikheyev are all decent.. Mikheyev had a slow start but has still been doing other things well. Simmonds is hurt, but a good player still.

You're going to find Leaf fans on either side of some of these things. Mikheyev and Engvall may not be producing with points, but I think they are valuable players. They're fast, they are effective on the PK, and they have the ability to put up modest points in a bottom 6 role. I have no problem with them.

Barabanov has not found is role. He should go play on the Marlies and get 15-20 minutes / night for a bit and see if he can acclimate to the game here. The initial feel just watching him is that he sucks.

Vesey . . . I mean. Not impressed.

That said, these are guys playing 6-10 minutes of 5v5 / game. They aren't the problem. If you look at their 5v5 stats, they're each -1 in GF.

I may not love Bogosian, but he has been mostly effective. He was terrible against Ottawa in the last game, but for the most part you know what you're getting - not the smartest decision maker, but strong and physical and clears out the front and ties up sticks. That is a lot better than _any_ of the other defensemen on this team who aren't Muzzin or Holl. There's a role for that guy.
