Joe gets another month but lets be realistic ...the Leafs are trying to win a cup ..and if they can improve and the price is right ...they have to do it.

You don't make a choice not to get better bc of a promise you may have made to a guy who's been a member of the dressing room for a minute.

Love Joe ...and there's no doubt he knows all of this too. He's a gud pro!

- The Law

Yeah, I'm not buying the narrative that Joe demanded he play Top 6 minutes for any specific length of time (or if any was even discussed in the first place).

Joe wants a Cup and I think he'd be happy riding the 4th line if it meant he could end up raising it.

I think teams that make trades at the TDL AND make a deep playoff are not the ones that acquire the big/sexy name. 75% it’s the team that got the depth piece(s). I’d like to see them get a big winger that plays too his size with some grit (playoff hockey as they say). To me Bertuzzi @ $3.25M fits the bill as he has scoring touch, size and plays physical. I would think that the leafs would consider moving pieces like Engval, Dermot prospects and picks (combination not all). DET can retain some salary too.

Hopefully, he seems to keep being put back there even though I think Hyman is a better fit.

One more point. Dubas has shown a track record for pursuing players that meet some or all of these conditions:-
- GTA/Ontario born players
- Played for the Soo
- Skilled
- Have term (not playoff rentals)

Was that rumoured?

I was thinking his name would be out there. Not sure what he has left but as a cheap deadline buy ...yes please. checking centre or big banging winger.

Another veteran add for next year?

That would be amazing .... but Detroit should want Sandin or Liljegren for starters, then Engvall or Mikheyev and Woll/Scott

It's pretty simple math actually. Leafs can't really add salary at this point. According to Cap Friendly they have $30K in current cap space and will have about $130K at the deadline - which could improve with cap space generated by injuries to players earning over the minimum. Unless Dubas can convince Kerfoot to be injured, that means Leafs will have to trade equal salary off the roster to add. Not easy when you consider that the other team can retain a maximum of 50%. Would have to be a top 6 with a real cheap salary probably on an expiring contract. (I would think this commodity is in short supply and high demand)

Perfect world - we'd have 2 Hymans to play with AM and JT lines.

That's why I don't doubt they've got their eye out for that type of guy.

So you're saying Dubas is trading for Tony DeAngelo?

EDIT: Oh boo, forgot he was American.

ya, any add is 99.9% going to be a pending UFA veteran. A team can take 1/2 of the salary and the TD is late so the cap hit gets squeezed pretty tight. I'm sure Pridham has it down to the nickel and will be juggling taxi squad and I.R. for the next 6+ weeks.

Getzlaf would be a great add IMO - problem is, he makes $8.25 Million and with the Ducks taking back Kerfoot wouldn't clear enough salary - which other contract do Leafs move and how many picks/prospects to get Anaheim to absorb that? Very tough to do at very best.

I'm confused. Don't contending teams look to make trades to improve their chances?

I seem to recall Tampa adding Coleman and Goodrow last season. Can we be like them?

- mjones242

Sure but I’m not seeing proposed improvements.

Heard Getzlaf's name first from me - a few days ago wHen archaic was wondering whether leafs could potentially trade for an injured player.

Only way leafs can fit in getzlaf's salary is if they move approx 5mln caphit out. So kerfoot + ??

Not suggesting it would happen but just playing this out ...

Getzlaf, with 50% retained, would have 960k cap hit if traded on April 12th.

Only for reference Engvall at his full cap hit on April 12th would have 291k
....Kerfoot would have 814k.

Mine was speculation on players that leafs should be interested in - you're saying you've got some solid inside info (E2 ) though

Engvall would be less than that because you have to replace him with a minimum salary taxi guy in the lineup. Curious what the cost would be in picks/prospects.

Good point, gives the Leafs another month to accumulate cap space to accomodate a move. In addition the two week wait will be another opportunity to accumulate cap space. TDL is April 12 so a trade in late March or early April would seem ok.
- winsix

I've read that the States will be all vaccinated by the end of April so odds are that there won't be a waiting list.
Speaking of being vaccinated by the end of April, Canada can't even get a quarter of what they have already paid for by then.

Can't wait for Tampa to add Kucherov to their lineup at the deadline.

- Scabeh

Are you saying Tampa will have their "A" team for the playoffs?

Julien BriseBois: I love it when a plan comes together.
