Pretty sure it was “you can’t win with him as your best player” and they were right. So he went on with his $8m/yr to play on the 3rd line of a pretty good team.

If we can bump Nylander to the 3rd line because of better fits in the top 6 we too will probably win the cup.

*eats a crayon after drawing parade route*

Ps. Set your lineup before 4pm and Boston / NJ postponed.

Lots were saying can't win with him, but then Pitts did....and he was their best player in their first cup win.

Dam it, I'll have to take a look I think I might have some of those guys. These ppd are killing me.

Playing 3rd line at $8m he better have some good #’s. He’s not Crosby or Malkin though. IMO

Like every player drafted and developed by the Leafs. You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain...and then have great success elsewhere.
- AdamFrench

How Travis Dermott has navigated through the minefield of Leaf-fan-ire is beyond me.

He should be on everyone's lips as "the next to go" and yet he still seems to have a great many people wanting to hang on to him because: a) he's a magical "depth" piece that almost certainly can't be replaced by anyone else in the org -and/or- b) he still hasn't reached his mythical ceiling.

Well, folks, he's my El Guapo and he's got to go.

Last week was brutal, I thought I was a step ahead and took out players for games I read were ppd and then they played and other teams lost games

Kessel should have won the Conn Smythe the first time he won the cup with Pittsburgh.

But yeah, Malkin and Crosby ARE better players, no doubt about it.

At his age and cost ...meh. He's doing alright on the 3rd pair and I'm ok giving him some rope to show what, if anything, he can be.

That said ...the expansion draft is approaching and the Leafs have to expose a D ...he's leading that list.

D take longer so why ship if we don’t need to, what’s wrong with Dermott? His underlying #’s are always pretty good. I couldn’t care either way but I think he’s ok and it gives Sandin more time.

Yes, getting to come on the ice after the other teams 2 top lines and 4 best D leave should have and did give him an awesome opportunity. He still might be my favourite Leaf for shot release...Matthews may be about to take over though

Nah... people point to Kessel having more points than Crosby but it was Sid that carried that team in uber-grinding fashion.

Kessel had 3 more points and 4 more goals but 0 of them were winners. Crosby had 3 winners whilst playing against the oppo's best checking lines. Far harder mins.

Definitely Conn Smythe-worthy. If anything, Matt Murray is the guy I think you could make a better case for as deserving (though I'd still give it to Sid).

I like Dermott and Engvall

No need to trade away young cheap players who are still developing for minimal returns

Expansion draft puts a wrinkle into plans

No mistakes and playing well, but he hasn't won a Norris and skated circles around the opposition so he sucks.

We’re sputtering along pretty good with zero training camp. I wouldn’t do too much right now unless someone folds and wants to throw us some awesome D for futures and a Dermott or Giraffe etc.

So Kessel scored more but he got "easier minutes" and his goals were "not as important"?

I'm sorry, I'm not buying this.

The idea for Pittsburgh was to have a star player on each line so the team would have to leave one open, which ended up being Kessel most of the time.

Guy produced more than anyone else in the playoffs. Yes he benefited from the team's strategy but that doesn't take anything away from him imo.

Giving it to Crosby was the easy choice and they went for it. Not that it was a terrible choice mind you, just thought Kessel deserved it more.

He's his usual, mediocre-self. If he can be packaged up to bring in something the team is lacking, like a truculent truffle, I'd move him in a heartbeat.

It's how people defend him as a necessary piece instead of a barely replacement level 3rd pairing warm body that drives me.
