I am reading Pat Quinn's book now and I think it is a great read but if you look at how he built that 94 team, you have to have him at the top of the list. The clever trades he made to surround Linden and Bure was masterful. The book details every trade I was blown away at how many times he made smart trades to get quality players on the cheap.(Ronning, Gelinas-on waivers, Babych, Lumme-for a 5th round pick?!) Jeff Brown, Maclean.

He took chances but most paid off. I think we don't want Gillis back, but I do want a GM with the balls to take a chance ie. disgruntled players from other teams on the cheap that have real value, cap dumps etc.

Make moves that give you the option and flexibility to make the next move later down the line. Dump players who other teams value for picks - I am not sure why Benning just can't get this done, but man does he struggle to get picks in trades.

Apples and oranges, two very different times as there wasn’t a salary cap back then and trades were much more prevalent around the league.

Teams rarely build around trading these days, it’s draft, develop your own kids and then supplement with some trades. The 1994 team was almost entirely built through trading.

I think it's safe to say there's disgruntled players on the team right now. The flat cap and bad contracts don't help JB, but I also don't believe he's a good negotiator. Deals can still be made, a couple more losses and JB should be in sell mode, lets see how that works out? Or let the new GM clean the mess up.

It was different times and in a cap world it's much harder but he wasn't afraid to make trades is really all I was pointing out. I feel like Benning could be a great head scout, but is out of his depths with the other parts of the job.
We can talk all we want about him staying but the writing is on the wall I think, I don't feel like he will finish the season.

What would be the point of rebuilding if you can't draft if your life depended on it?

6 years. Bo Horvat and Ben Hutton, Kevin Countanon are the only 3 players from 6 years of drafting in the NHL still.

Benning has 4 players from his first year alone.

Remember the narrative, the past gm gets credited with the first couple drafts of the new gm, so Gillis gets credit for those 4, except Virtanen who was an Aquilini pick

Tonight is the first game that I'm going to try to intentionally not watch, out of pure spite for Benning

There’s speculation there’s an “out clause” for Francesco Aquilini on Benning’s contract, as there was with Mike Gillis’s. I say he’s going to use it.

No more rookie GM’s unless you hire an experienced President of Hockey Operations. The organization needs to stop the cycle of inexperienced general managers.

Yes, this.

I don't want Gillis as GM, I think he'd make a good president though.

The Benning hate that's out there now, very close to the MG days. I think the rubber hits the road if they lose again tonight.

Agree, he was excellent at trading, I think Brian Burke won more than he lost as well. Benning seems to put his eye on a player and he’ll pay whatever it takes to get said player thus losing on most of his deals.

I've been a staunch defense of Benning for years now, but seeing as he's the longest tenured GM without any success... it's time

Was just reading Ottawa is open for business . Basically said make them an offer and we will look at it.

I wouldn't mind bottom 6 forward Auston Watson. He is a player that I can see having a reasonable trade .

I didn’t know that! Hmmm kinda makes me more on team fire. If anything it would be something to talk about besides lack of effort and results.
