If the buyout hit was around $1.3 for the next three years I'd be all for it, but since it creeps into the ability to extend the window I don't like it. $1.3M during the rebuild really isn't that bad, but that three year chunk of $2.3 is just bad.

All of AZ's defense aside from OEL and Chychrun are UFA's after this year. I find it likely that Gogo and Hjarl are heading towards retirement or if they play, probably taking a cheap contract with a contender.

If they are planning to get into a rebuild, I think there's a fit.

Honestly did not know Hammer was still in the league.

Haha yup.

I think the Pens could create some kind of deal around Matheson, 2nd and a prospect for Gogo or Hammer. I hate to give up a 2nd, but 2021 is a poop draft and getting his contract off the books would be worth it IMO.

AZ needs picks and prospects worse than we do.

I don’t like the interview with zucker where he was asked since they are only playing 2 teams over the next couple weekes if they adjusted their practices to work on specific opponent things like disrupting zone entries etc. Of (frank)ing course sully wouldn’t do that. Just work on them and not worry about your opponent. Wtf

What's the story on Paul Byron? I really don't know much about him. I know he's had some injury issues. He's on waivers. Is he worth the Pens looking into once he clears?

JRs strategy was to build a deep roster because it was obvious there were going to be more man games lost this year. The problem is, he tied up all of their cap space in guys who weren't much better than Ahl players.

I'll disagree with you on Ceci though, he has actually been really solid. Hoffman would have been that Kessel like acquisition where you get an extra guy who can just create goals out of nowhere.

- MacPatty

Deep is only deep if your players are actually serviceable. A roster full of replacement level players like Jank, Erod, Lafferty, Matheson, and Ceci to an extent (although I will agree with you that he has been serviceable in a sheltered/third pairing role) wasn’t really considered a “deep” roster.

Game planning/roster planning for man games lost is a boneheaded plan. While it should definitely be given though, the goal should be to build the best 20-22 man roster possible and he failed miserably at that, IMO.

I’ve been saying this about the blue line for a while but applies to forwards as well. Unless you have waiver exempt players, you really can only go 7/8 D deep of legitimate NHL caliber players at one time. There’s only a certain amount of depth you can accumulate under the salary cap. Just go get the best players possible.

He’s a fast bottom 6 with offensive upside and a good PKer. Get MTL to retain and he’s a good add. Otherwise not worth 3.4m.

What about a McCann/Byron swap or do you stick with McCann?

So is Yahoo, it's a total crapshoot. I missed over 20 man games this week.

I think he meant the general acquisition of Tatar. Would like that as well. Knocking zucker down to jank s line would help that line, give O’Connor time to man up in the ahl. Just don’t know what it would take to get Tatar. If he’s scratched can’t be too much but would have to match the $

I'll start to think of what I believe are good trades for Matheson, but the reality sets in and it's not good. Nobody is taking that contract. Maybe if the Pens had a #1 pick and a top prospect they could pull it off, but they don't. Seattle will not bail the Pens out and no team, not even at 50% retained would likely take him.

I firmly believe there are only two options to get rid of Matheson:

1) The worst option: Trading Matheson for Lucic, Neal or the like.

2) Buyout. Which IMO is the wisest decision, but I can't see that happening. They can't do that right now anyway, so regardless we're stuck with Matheson for at least this season.

EDIT: With all that said, I still believe if there's any team where they could possibly win a trade with it would be AZ.

If we don't think we'll be competitive in the near future anyways, wouldn't it be better to just keep Matheson rather than use assets to move him?

Not to me. Part or all of his salary needs to be dumped so the Pens can afford to add players.
