Pens ownership has said they need to make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs every year to break even (Playoff Revenue)

Since there won't be any playoff revenue this year, regardless of round, if there is any year to be sellers and just let it play out, even if that means missing the playoffs or getting bounced in round 1, It's this year

I've said for a while that a lot of the TDL pickups aren't about getting a team over the hump or a cup win, sometimes it's just about winning a few more games or just getting into another round. Every Home game is worth anywhere from 3-5 Million in revenue. That's real pressure GM's get from ownership

There will be people in the stands by May. How many, I can't say. People are getting vaccines and by early May if you want a vaccine you will have gotten one.

For them to end up on the third line it would take about $10 million in cap space and unfortunately half of that went out the window with JJ and bigbird

- Malkin

3rd wheel, not 3rd line. As in they should be the 3rd best player on the 2nd line.

Pens could of had a chance to bring someone in but they went out and wasted cap space on:
Ceci: 1.25m
Jankowski: 700k
Erod: 700k
Scevour 1.2m

That's like 3.85m that could have been used to say.. try for Hoffman? Not saying he wanted to come here.. but at least having the option to sign him at 4m would have been nice.

Guentzel-Sid-Rust
Hoffman-Geno-Kap
Zucker-McCann-Horny
ZAR-Blueg-Tanev

looks a bit more complete than that forward list we got now.

Sound like Pitt needs a better business model. Making it to the 2nd round every year isn’t sustainable for anyone.
- 10inchTerror

The market only dictates so much revenue during the regular season. For the Pens to be a "Cap Ceiling" team they need the 2nd round to break even

Of course then could just be a cap floor team and make money, but then you have to be good on the ice to fill the building

It's the difference between NYC @$250 ticket on average vs Pittsburgh @$125 on average

They need sellouts at playoff ticket prices, to go along with a ton of consession sales, etc

There isn't a ton of money to be made this playoffs with at best 25% capacity and people leery of being in crowds.

If Burke has convinced ownership that the solution is to take the pain this year, and build towards more season and playoff success in future years, they'll do it. Goes hand in hand with GMJR quitting over not getting an extension, they don't like the direction/makeup of the team. If Mario can't see this for himself, I guarantee he's got Sid's opinion on it

Might have been the reason Burke was brought on. Maybe they recognize it and didn't want Hextall to be the front man for the mini teardown, the short term criticism he'd get while he restocked the shelves and rebuilt the team

So the pens are twelfth overall in average ticket prices and need to reach the 2nd round to break even. Pitt also has the longest sellout streak and is usually ranked near the top for sales of gear and still needs to reach the 2nd round to break even. So basically 2/3 of the lg is losing money every year. That isn’t right.

From what has been posted, the organization has no problems spending money on layers of employees and amenities for the players. Reports like this are misleading. Some how they also got relief money?

I'll never forget an interview with Niskanen right after they finally got past the Pens before they won the cup. He said Trotz lambasted the team because (paraphrasing), "they were letting little guys like Rust and Sheary beat them". I was actually surprised this interview didn't get more attention around here because it was absolutely the truth. After that season, the Pens have been manhandled mostly. One injury after another.

Getting a little bigger doesn't mean you have to play without speed and skill.

- madmike71

Really isn't surprising, seems like the type of quote our media would laugh off. So many of them are so speed=good that they're always championing some fast guy with limited talent like Lafferty, Archibald, or Adam Johnson because they're so noticable on the ice.

One of the problems with HCMS styles is he encourages these senseless hits buy guys not built for it...EX #59. I will stick to my theory .....Ryan Reeves is a more effective 4th line player than our whole 4th line this year. The Icelanders have very good 4th line, as good as our 3rd line?
- Malkin

Reaves is just flat out a better hockey player than any of the guys playing on our 4th line most nights. That's a problem, one of many.

Had an interesting trade idea. We potentially had interest in another goalie aka Fleury.

Previously this off-season there were multiple rumors in Florida and LA that the Kings were trying to acquire Matheson before he was traded to the Pens.

Maybe Hextall can work his magic for a Matheson to Kings in a trade for Quick. There would probably be other moving pieces, but it could be an option.
