Really interesting, especially when they talk about what happens if they miss the playoffs this year. If the pens miss the playoffs, I really think Letang is gone, especially with Marino/POJ proving to be top 4 players.

They also mentioned Pens/Malkin can begin working on a new contract after this season. I’m really interested to see what the pens will offer a 36 year old Malkin. Do they give him a 1-2 year extension at the similar price or try to extend him 3-4 years at a lower price

I think the consensus is 3 years so he aligns with Sid. I’d hope half price. But I’m sure that will be dealt with as soon as it can. Same with Letang. And if they aren’t resigned right away I’m sure it means writing on the wall.

I highly doubt half price. My guess is around the $7M mark.

If he was a 7 mill cap hit this year we could of had another overpaid bottom pair d-man or a few more fringe NHL bottom 6 wingers..

Yeah as a gm My first approach would be half with both 71 and 58 as to help the team alleviate cap concerns. I think the 2/3 mark would be about right, as I’m sure their agents first request will be to keep the salary the status quo.

All I said was, "They didn't give Jagr what he wanted so he went elsewhere." That's it.

Why was Jagr disgruntled and why did he want to leave? Who is to say Malkin is not disgruntled and doesn't want to leave? Yes, I know no two situations are exactly alike. Of course they aren't. But I get annoyed with these bombastic, declarative statements like, "Yes. I'm guaranteeing you right now that if Geno wants to continue playing in the NHL that it will be with the Penguins and they will give him what he wants." It is way over the top and nobody knows what Rino claims to know for certain.

As for what Malkin has said and maybe truly felt, that's fine. Like you say, he could easily change. He may be disgruntled like Jagr and has been for years but is coached to say the right things and is more savvy with the media. Nobody knows for sure. Yes, I agree, it is improbable that Malkin goes before his contract is up but not impossible as Rino "knows" it is. Maybe Malkin wants to play with Panarin in New York before that. Maybe the Pens won't want him back when he is 36 years old and don't "give him what he wants." Nothing would be that shocking or even surprising really.

I know what you mean. And I understand your frustration with concrete declarative statements. We can either speculate or take people's word at face value. Both are fine. I prefer face value. It's sports, so there's a lot of what-ifs. I'm not really saying much, but I think you get my point.

Yeah, I get what you mean. And I think it's more likely that Malkin is sincere in his statements and I think it's more likely he plays out his contract here. However, this is all beside the point. The point is, the Pens and Jagr parted ways. The Oilers and Gretzky parted ways. It is very possible that the Pens and Malkin part ways for whatever reason. All three situations are completely different. And all three may see an elite / generational talent part ways from the only team for whom they ever played. I will not be surprised at all if Malkin is traded to another team or if the Pens don't resign him in two years.

Even trading Horny with his contract during Covid times, his age, and a full NTC seemed highly unlikely. Yet, here we are.

The thing is, Rino doesn't care about the point. He just wants to go off on some tangential aspect of the argument (in this case saying it was a bad example) in order to try to "win" the argument. Some kind of stupid internet chat board pissing contest that he needs in order to feel superior to others. I make flat out wrong statements here and there and have no problem when people correct me on them (I actually appreciate it). This is not that kind of scenario at all.
