If that's not grounds for sacking, I don't know what is.

it's not

Nationwide Arena’s off-ice officials are in the process of training a video coordinator, a person charged with making sure NHL hockey-operations executives in Toronto can connect with NHL officials at ice level for just this kind of review, using both audio (headsets) and video (Apple iPads).

“The video technician is just supposed to coordinate this upstairs (at press level),” Campbell told The Athletic in a late-night interview. “They’re not supposed to get involved. They’re just supposed to set up things. We do the communicating with the (officials).

[...]

“The (video coordinator) was eager, he was trying to get involved, but that’s not his place to get involved,” said Campbell, who declined to share the off-ice official’s name.

He just didn’t understand that this isn’t his role to be involved in this. He’s the caretaker of what goes on there, making sure all the communication is taking place. But once the connection is made, it’s us talking to the officials.

The lack of properly addressing an unfortunate (but easily remediated) situation is the "issue"

Can we just ask Ryan Sittler to time-travel to the game last night. His job is to go offside by 25 feet so the play is whistled down. The game ends 5-5. But during the shootout, this scoring phenom (he was 14th in scoring on his ECHL team) can score the shootout winner. Then Ek and his sister could be invited to come on the ice during the 3-stars. David Poile would be there too. And Shania.

What a mess the NHL created. The proper thing to do was for the NHL to follow their rules, doesn't matter how unpopular it is.

Mistakes have happened before (even with video replay) and will happen again. The key is to remain consistent. The rule is (or atleast I thought it was), once play stops and restarts again, what happened, happened and if it was right or wrong you play on.

People might not like it, but the right thing to do was continue they way it has been, and apoligise after the game and admit the mistake.

Doing what they did creates a massive mess. What happens the next time, and the other teams scores on the PP? What happens if you take a delay of game penatly because you were killing the first penalty? By allowing something to be changed, you open yourself up to bunch of other possiblities.

I agree they 1/2 assed it but I disagree with your take on the rule. I don't believe there a rule for this specific instance (hence "no precedent") but there is one that works "in spirit" that could have easily been used to set one.

If a goal is *missed* they stop the game and reset the clock to the time it was scored as soon as they notice.

Why is it so hard to do the same when one is scored? There would be no need to negate the penalty because it would have never happened.

But there is a rule. The rule has always been the call on the ice stands (in this case a goal), and if the team whats to review it, it must be done before play starts. This isn't the first time they have made a mistake in video reviews. It might be the first time a team gets a penalty because of it, I don't know.

As for if they missed a goal. When they miss a goal they don't stop play. They continue playing until the whistle blows. At that point they review the play, and if the goal is allowed they run back the clock (whether it is 30 seconds or 10 minutes depends on how long they played with a stop in play). However, they review the play before play starts again. Once play starts again, they never stop to review a play that happened earlier in the game.

Thinking about a play a couple years ago when Neal broke his stick over Hellebyck's face and scored while Helle picked splinters out of his mask. After review it was ruled a goal as somehow it didn't interfere with the goalie.

I've said this before: the offside review is IMO one of the worst rules in sports. Not to mention the fact that they sometimes even get it wrong even after the review. After the play goes into the zone and the linesman calls it either onside or offside, it should be over with. It is a judgement call "judged" by the linesman and that's all it should be. Yes there will be times where the call may be "wrong" by about a centimetre, but 99.9% of the time the linesmen get it right anyway.

I may be biased from the Landeskog offside review call a couple year ago, but that was one of the worst calls I've ever seen in any sport (considering it was on the tying goal in a game 7)

Lost amidst the controversy in Columbus is that they aren't even close to winning their division. Good call Ek!

I guess that were back to the half a** Ref's!! For 5 of the last 6 Blues Games the morons in stripe do not know how to call a game. Blues announcer Chris Kerber and sidekick Joe Vitale want to know what's going on with the league and all these Horse Manure calls. The Blues have had two players with major concussions and no suspensions, in the first game of the season, Sammy Blais hit shoulder to shoulder with Toews who went off the ice for 9 minutes and back to play the rest of the game. THE THREE STOOGES (WHO NEED TO RETIRE) COLIN CAMPBELL, MIKE MURPHY AND STEVEN WALCOM NEED TO GO, THEY SUSPENDED SAMMY FOR TWO GAMES. When Mark Stone not once but twice cross checked Tyler Bozak in the head, Stone gets 2 minutes and no suspension, I guess BETTMAN looked the other way with the THREE STOOGES!!! I cannot wait for another Bill Masterton injury before these THREE STOOGES ARE GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the What?

This is so messed up. Even by NHL standards.

The PP isn't the BIG issue. The fact you let a goal stand that you determined was off-sides is ridiculous. (and yeah, correcting the PP is important too).

I'm almost disappointed Torts didn't completely lose his poop.

- Queenie_5_hole

The league should be fined and have to pay Torts, since they were wrong and he shut his yap about it. Poor guy has been contributing to the league for years, there should be some sort of credit for that here, lol.

What a Cluster (frank).

Probably the worst call I've ever heard of, since it was easily remedied after the fact.
