I have a feeling Matheson is going to look really rough the first few games.

I also have a feeling against the well oiled/well coached team, thats given them fits the past few years, its not going to be pretty Saturday haha. Theyre not in top form yet but they always find a way to keep the Pens scoring low...

I’m hoping in a months time he’ll look alright lol hopefully.

Is there a level of rough below how the defence has looked this year?

Meh. Don’t see why it couldn’t happen. Although petts is the only person with a steady job so Pitt is giving up the best player. But if healthy he can potentially be expendable.

That's OK, but I'd rather try and package Petts with stuff to grab a bigger fish.

I’d consider using dumo to get a bigger fish and keeping petts. And FYI I just don’t like petts for no specific reason. If dumo can bounce back with tanger after this injury he would be my trade person since he needs a new contract soon, and if he expects a raise it wouldn’t be coming from me.

Yeah we’re giving up the best player in that trade which should always give you pause.

Ya I want all the fish that win you the fishing derbys too only thing is the "blah" d men at 25-29 years old usually dont catch you the big fish and I dont think its smart to ship off Poulin/Legare and a 2022 1st to get it done.

Legere isn’t that good of a prospect, he’s just one of our best ones. But that’s a tallest midget situation. Legere and a 1st is perfectly valid and expendable package for the right player.

Im bored, lets hear the big fish trade for Legare and a 1st. My thinking as well is even with this big fish we are still gonna be the softest team in the league to play against. like puppy shiit soft or 10 ply.

I honestly don’t know. Like I said, Legere isn’t that good of a prospect so I’m not super bullish Legere and a 1st even gets you a big fish. My point is if it does, you do it.

Well I had Petts in there as well. So Petts or Dumo with Legare or Poulin and a pick for the bigger fish.

Agreed. I dont think Legare gets us much back at all. And Im hesitant to already dish our next 2 1st rounders. To be totally honest I dont think Petterrson would get us that much either but I think that more realistic trade would 100% make us much harder to play against and would make our 4 forward lines all capable of scoring.

Some flames fans say Bennett has 40 point potential being 24 years old and not playing with plugs but that discussion is for another day. Always seems good in front of the net when Ive watched him though which might help that PP. His "compete level" I dont think is something that will ever be questioned kinda like Tanev.

Listen, to be hard to play against we don't need to be bruisers that beat the poop out other teams. That's certainly one way to be hard to play against, but it's not realistic to get there with our current roster and our stars aren't really build to play bully puck. But the other way to be tough to play against is to be (frank)ing dogs. Dogs that scrap and wear you down on the fore and back check. That grind out the cycle and win puck battles. In 2015-2016, we were dogs.

I think people missed the forest for the trees when this board started talking about speed vs. grit. These aren't flip sides to the same coin and aren't mutually exclusive. You can have guys that can skate but aren't dogs at all like Rodrigues, Mathesson, Lafferty, Jankowski, etc... And you can have guys with "gritty" aspects to their game that don't make the team any harder to play against. Johnson, Gudbranson, Bjugstad. On the other hand, Hornqvist wasn't fast, but he was a dog, and Hagelin wasn't gritty but he was a dog.

This team, above all, needs more (frank)ing dogs. I prefer them to be fast. I like the Kapanen/Tanev/Rust mold. I think you can win with a team of Kapanens, Tanevs, and Rusts provided that you have enough finishers who can actually put the puck in the net to complement them. But I'd much prefer to have guys that don't skate very will but go hard on the cycle than the collection of Nilla Waifers we currently have as bit pieces like Rodrigues, Lafferty, and Jankowski. Speed without skill or battle is utterly useless.

First and foremost our stars have to be stars. Malkin and Letang need to turn their seasons around or we're going nowhere. But if that happens, something as simple as replacing Rodrigues, Jankowski, and Lafferty with three dogs I think would go a long way.

I said this in a previous blog that I've always had a thing for Sam Bennett, statistically he has always stunk, and at 24 it is way more likely that he just is what he is than him having another gear that he'd hit with a change of scenery. And I acknowledge that. But on a $2.5 mil expiring contract, I'd love to give him a chance to prove himself if the price were low enough. Sam Bennett is a dog.

#2 leads team in penalty minutes , this guy blows. Why do i keep reading that this guy is serviceable? I bet you he doesn’t have 5 hits and i don’t care about his CORSI crap he stinks. He has no upside Weber is a better defensemen and least when he is on the ice he attempts to skate with the puck. #2 turns his back and shuffles the puck into open space. He is getting in the way of some of our younger guys. Put him in the press box!

HCMS NEEDS TO GO!
