Then that's your problem, those 3 players have improved heaps and bounds and at 23 are all top forwards in the game.
Off ice, on ice, how they take care of themselves. There is a lot that goes on in the game and I think its super ignorant as a fan to say vets don't have value when teams constantly have desire to have them. Is there something you know that they don't? - Santo_44

I fully think that having added Marleau was a net positive for the Leafs (even if we consider Dubas giving up the picks and players to get rid of that last year of his contract - that's more on Dubas than on Marleau as a player).
Biggest contribution off ice from Marleau was creating the precedent for a top player (or at least a highly regarded player) signing with the Leafs -- opening up the door for Tavares.
that being said -- judging Matthews' off-ice behaviour, I am not sure too what extent he has helped that part. - MaximusAurelius
He had one incident when he was 20.
An overblown incident where he got caught doing something stupid. The whole league is in the same boat except most don't get caught.
So yeah, not a big deal and he has never got caught again so who cares |

Marleau has played 1,000 games, he was very close with AM and Marner and they 100% benefited from him. How could you not? Unless you are a Richard like Deangelo there is a lot of things a good respected talented vet can teach a team. - Santo_44
Marleau was a mistake in hindsight, cost us too much but in cap and assets. Sure he may have been good for some of the kiddies but could have had vet leadership for a little cheaper. But c'est la vie. |

I don't disagree.
You pay 700K-1.5M for vets.
Not 6.5M. |

I have stories of Name Kadri being a total douche, the only difference is he knows what will and won't get to the media |

Cool, Leafs are awesome and their young players have it all figured out because Marleau and Thornton explained it all to them.
t has really shown up in the way they display a consistent work ethic and attention to detail and the regular season and playoff progression.
Of course, there is literally nothing that supports any of that, but we'll just go ahead and drink the blue koolaid.
This is still a league that allows fighting, and incidents that could threaten careers and livelihoods with minimal, if any, penalty and of course GMs never make stupid moves that are even ridiculous without the benefit of hindsight.
Leafs are perfect, GMs are perfect, the league is perfect and nothing should be questioned, ever.

In hindsight it looks bad, but at the time that's what was required.. SJ offered him $6M also, so he got more years here.. If Lou didn't go hard after Marleau, he would not have come here.. |

I do think that adding a veteran, leader can help individual players. Matthews and Marner should've learned something from Marleau..
Now, if they both decided to ignore what he said or forgot the message already that's on the them, but I do believe adding a proven veteran can help players on the roster..
Even if the message is just that they've been there before and know how to react.. A lot can be said for experience.

Freddy and Dermott(apparently Steve Dangle was saying Dermott has quietly asked for a trade, I assume that means he whispered into Dubas' ear?) for Kuemper and Crouse |

And we could have gone out and got another guy.
He had a decent first year.
Second year was painful. |

If Dermott asked for a trade I'd do whatever it took to unload him on Buffalo, Winnipeg or Ottawa. |

Nice over exaggeration.
Simply just questioned your thought process on why you disagree with all GMs that have ever ran a team. Everyone values veteran leadership, in all aspects of life as well. |
