It was me.

It was my hot take of the day.

I also picked Buffalo to make the playoffs, but they at least have a chance after 10 games.

Wow.

I thought they could be the 2016-2017 Leafs.

Turns out they are much closer to the 2015-2016 Leafs.

They have an interesting core of good young players.

But these young guys are not ready to take over a team and be competitive.

And the veteran players acquired to help them are terrible. Murray, Stepan, Gudbranson..... REALLY PIERRE?!?

Yeah, its funny, Dorion hits on a few things (Tkachuk, Stutzle, Chabot), but then shows he has no acumen or sense when he makes moves like that. Why bother with those guys?

Why sign Dadonov instead of playing his young players? I know its good to have veterans around, but not those guys.

It really feels like the early days of the Edmonton rebuild. When they surrounded Hall, RNH and Eberle with guys like Andrew Ference (who was named Captain somehow) thinking it would help them.

Carrying a bunch of dead weight isn't good for anybody.

Exactly. The moves appear to have no thought out plan behind them. Its more like "Who can we get to come here and just going down he list"

Or maybe they are hoping for the #1 pick, instead of 10-14?

I once said that the Leafs won the trade for Toskala, because Mark Bell was going to be awesome in the blue and white.

It's crazy how much the media loves to ride the Habs Richards. I mean they are a good team, but a juggernaut? After playing the canucks 5 games out of the 10, that's a bit dumb

Yet the leafs go 7-2 and they are getting lucky

- Archaic

Agreed. It's early days yet and some teams are going to jump out of the gate (seemingly) more fully formed than others.

I'd like to think that the teams that have an abundance of skill will start to put it all together and start to dominate.

God, I hope so...

I can beat it with another Bell:

First time my older daughter ever went skating was on the ACC ice - a season ticket holder function.

The Leafs were on the road at the time, so there weren't any players from the roster. But there was Carlton the Bear, and I think maybe an alum or two.

Anyhoo, literally the first time she had ever been on skates. She was wearing the double blades, but her feet were too small, so I had to tape them to her boots, which of course were soft, so they provided no ankle support.

So after about 20 minutes, my back is franking killing me. I prop her up on the boards to take a rest, and some young dude in a Leafs jersey skates up and introduces himself.

It's Brendan Bell. He didn't make the trip for whatever reason, so he was at the STH skate. OK, fine, nice to meet you.

He then proceeds to whip out a Sharpie and sign my daughter's Leafs jersey - right on the crest. In John Hancock style.

"Ummm, thanks."

The worst part was she wore that jersey for a few more years, and then her younger sister did.

Every franking time some dad would, "Who's the autograph?"

"Ummmmmm, Brendan Bell."

*****Awkward pause****

"Are you related to him or something?"

"No, he just signed the franking jersey without me franking asking him to."

1. Dadonov came cheaper than expected and if the hope was playoff level contention by his final year, it was a good move to get a top-6 forward to help out.

2. Stepan's cap hit is high, but he's technically cheap. Even though he sucks, he's sadly their second best centre.

Again, now doesnt seem the time to sign Dadonov IMO, and Stepan was simply a waste of assets of the teams intention was to bottom out.
