And we could have gone out and got another guy.

He had a decent first year.

Second year was painful.

- Atomic Wedgie

Third year was more painful.

and I would still like to see any evidence whatsoever that he helped in any way.

Being a gud pro comes from maturity, experience, and an inner drive. I am sure that veterans can help explain the day to day routines, pitfalls to avoid with the media and being on the road, etc ... but ANY vet, and even the coaches can help with that. They don't make the young guys want it any more or work any harder.

The ONE thing Thornton an Marleau may have been able to explain is how your career can go by way too fast and at some point you run out of chances at a cup...

even that I bet didnt help our young guys. I see very little progression in their games TBH.

Jumbo Joe might be DeAngelo's last chance in the league.

Pretty please with sugar on top...?!

Joe has been a 20 year old his entire NHL career

Its just about putting in the work and having the right attitude. Jumbo is a role model for any player that wants to be professional but soak in and enjoy the life of an NHL player. At the end of the day it is a game, find the balance.

His way of going about it has given him 20+ seasons in the NHL.

- Santo_44

Well that's great!

Barring injury and desire, do you think our young stars could play 20 years anyway?

I hope he teaches them how to win a cup... oh wait, nm.

Joe is likely to be more willing to get in someone’s face after a bad period/game.

I had assumed Marleau was signed to teach the kids how to avoid injuries by being a wussy.

The Leafs core is maturing, not particularly quickly. How did Marleau help? How is Thornton helping?
- Aetherial

If someone can teach these kids how to win a cup.

It's those two Sharks superstars and all their years of cup winning seasons.

That was the idea I guess.

I think the whole “learning how to win the cup” narrative is so overstated.

Mats Sundin was a fantastic player and a hall of famer. His experience does not get diminished because he didn’t win a cup. As a fan and a player you want your team to win a cup. However it’s extremely overrated when evaluating a player.

How did you get there? What team were you on? How healthy was your team? Who was your coach? Did your goalie get lucky or hot at the right time? Thousands of variables go into it that’s far out of a players control.

Joe is better than most names on the Stanley cup.

Bogo can teach them right? Who cares who won a Stanley cup. If Thornton was on the powerhouse Lighting he would of won a cup too, and he’d be no more experienced than he already is.

Way overblown.

What do you learn from winning a cup as an individual?

Way too many variables to actually care about that when evaluating a player.

Yeah so he could gain so much more experience and teach others how to win a cup because there is a secret formula that only a player can possess and pass on.
