Could Julius Honka of been had? He was put on waivers recently. I'd of taken a chance on him over Weber if they really felt they had to sign a right handed d-man

So Ruth apparently was trying to trade Letang, they said no and he left.

I read in the athletic this had nothing to do with anything related to deal disputes. It hints that the firing of Karamanos may have been the catalyst.

He was on waivers before we lost Dumo and Marino, otherwise they might have. He’s an unsigned RFA, so I don’t know how that affected any team from claiming him.

Oh I know he cleared waivers last week before the utter doom of the D, I'm just saying he might of been able to of been had for minimal assets, and that I'd of gone that route before signing someone like Yannik Weber haha.

My guess is they didn’t want to expend any assets if they didn’t have to. They barely have any picks this year. They have one 2nd, one 5th and three 7th's. So even though Honkna may be available, it's cheaper for them to grab someone temporary like Weber.

There's so much speculation. People are saying he wanted to trade Letang and ownership said no. We've heard he wanted a contract extension and was told not yet. We've heard he didn't want to fire Karmanos too.

It's very possible it's a combination of all 3. Maybe getting shut down on a Letang trade pushed him over the edge.

So Sid is currently 3rd in the league at all situations giveaways and Malkin is 10th.

At 5 on 5 Sid is 18th and Geno is 7th.

Tanev is 2nd in the league at takeaways all situations and 5 on 5.

Why did I look into this today? I was curious about Letangs numbers because to my eyes he hasnt been where Id like him to be. I know he's generally towards the top of giveaways because of his risk taking, and I get that, but right now he's ranked 42nd with only 6 in all situations giveaways and only has one 5 on 5 giveaway. I was surprised by this.

DK is sticking by the "contract dispute." Says Rutherford felt like he didn't deserve to be strung along as a lame duck.

With the amount of picks Jimmy was giving away, im sure he'd be no. 1 in giveaways

I forget now who's article I read this morning, but they said there was a huge blow up with JR when they fired Karamanos.

My guess is we may never really know what happened and we'll eventually hear something vague like he didn't think he saw eye-to-eye with ownership on various issues.

The Hornqvist trade is simply trading him a year too soon rather than a year too late. I am fine with that. You hit the nail on the head with the he was never replaced. I do remember this was the topic when people on here started the trade Hornqvist movement. I do think we have a couple guys who can transform into that role. That is how I will determine if the trade is successful or not.
- Thunderbolt

The Hornqvist trade is more because of what they got back then anything. Some people, and I'm one, also care about the net front, but to others that was never a big deal. But almost everyone was ok with Hornqvist leaving in a bubble.

The thing I don't buy with a year too late is that I think with only 2 years on his deal you could have found a way to send him to Seattle, particularly if he has a halfway decent year like he is, rather than take back a bad contract.

But he couldn’t help himself when The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun asked why he wouldn’t offer a reason beyond that.

“I don’t think it serves anybody well,” Rutherford said.

Nobody describes an amicable parting that way.

Ken Campbell of The Hockey News wondered why Rutherford didn’t just wait out his contract, which had only five months remaining.

“I’m not going to get into that,” Rutherford said, clearly signaling, again, that something happened here, something better left unsaid.

He was a stubborn old man not getting his way and quit. That's ultimately what happened in my mind. I think obviously things built up to get to this point but in the end he said F this I'm out for not getting his way.

Since it's going to be speculations anyhow, I say it's time to look to the future ...

I was going to use Family Guy "OMG WHO THE HELL CARES" meme, but it's no workie.
