As someone that watches but has no real experience in the game plans of hockey...is this guy on target? Do these observations point towards needing to change personnel/systems or more along the lines of working out the kinks and that observational coaching should get them corrected?
- shekkie

Watching the Bruins break out so easily those last couple games it seems to hold water. I also noticed early on that the game plan in the neutral zone this year seems to be these longs chip in stretch passes and have someone coming with speed which has had little success.

Greg Pateryn clears waivers. So its pretty clear 30 nhl gms don't believe "jam fighting and snarl" are keys to success.

Has everyone seen the Yandle rumor? Looks like it resurfaced. Today's, rumor is more specific. Yandle for Ghost swap. Any leg's to this? Not sure if it makes sense via the cap - or the expansion draft. Yandle was a consistent NHL'er for years, at 34 not sure how much gas he's got left. We'd be giving up the dream of Ghost's come back and giving up on youth. However, we do have guys in the pipeline to fill in when Yandle's done (if it's not this year).

The article - no cited author - calls it a "blockbuster" trade... Yandle for Ghost is not exactly blockbuster.

Makes zero sense from the flyers perspective and we can't even afford it.

Hes not. Hes a 6/7 at best. But if fighting snarl and jam was what mattered in this league like this board thinks he would be on a nhl team.

Fighting is different then Snarl and Jam(physicality)...but in today’s NHL, you have to able to play as well. if you don’t think the Flyers lack this I’m not sure what games you watch. It’s about as obvious as it gets, they are a soft team.

I would lure Byfuglien out of retirement

Is that possible? He is a force of nature and his career is not over yet.

Did we have it last year when we were arguably the best team in hockey with essentially the same team ?

This.... easy on the Friedman firing squad. One thing the kid does do is play with a bit of an edge...something they really, really need...yes he has to be better, and I’m sure he will be but he hasn’t played a game since March...that’s a long lay off
- landros 2

Friedman is probably in the lineup for playing with an edge... Something Gus doesn't have.

What he fails to realize is that whether you want to use a 1-2-2 or a 2-1-2, you have to execute. You have to move your feet. For example on the one breakout for the Bruins with Hayes in the F3 spot, he's all the way over at the boards. It's bad spacing and positioning. It left the entire passing lane in the neutral zone open and an easy entry. Playing a 2-1-2, F1 has to get on the puck or a quick pass beats you. Flyers aren't moving their feet aggressively regardless of what forecheck they play.

We lost in the playoffs, because we were a soft team. We were not the best team or even close to it last year. Although, we did have some good stretch's.

I think it’s arguable...but that’s probably the top out of what the current team is...I’ve never said there not good, or that they stuck. They do have some holes that unless filled will probably lead to the same result.
And what happened in the playoffs against both Montreal and the islanders? Montreal was no where as talented but made it a series by just being the hungrier team. The Islanders were probably the better team in all seven games. You obviously watch all the games...you really don’t see a soft team?

The argument is not whether the Flyers are currently a soft team. The question is if this team is capable of being a hard team to play against and a quality team with the current personnel. It's pretty much the same team minus Niskanen and some injuries. Before the stoppage last year they were playing like one of the best teams in the league for a significant period of time. Then in the playoffs, they regressed and it has carried over to this year. What is the real team. Most likely somewhere between the two.

I saw a similar report stating that Wheeler and Laine did not get along and that Wheeler felt his position on the team as top RW was threatened by Laine so he caused issues amongst the team, speaking about Laine behind his back and having Scheifle declare he wanted to play with Wheeler.

Normally I wouldnt put too much thought into this but when you look at the WPG roster over the years, there has to be some truth to this considering the long list of players who vocally wanted out. Buffy, Trouba, Roslovic, Laine, E.Kane. I have also seen quotes and opinions from reporters who received negative responses and attitude from Wheeler.

Frankly I think the writing on the wall here is quite clear.

The Devils have probably found the best coach to fit their DNA. I think they will make the playoffs.

I really want to believe this! I'm so tired of watching other teams in the playoffs.

Most wanted out because Winnipeg is just not a desirable place to live and play. You should take gossip with caution.

It makes 0 sense if we are the ones keeping Cap on Ghost which I cant really see. Ownership wants Yandle gone in FLA makes more sense for them to move Yandle and keep some cap unless something else is going with Ghost.

Fletcher could give up on the Gus experiment. Should be easy to move on the 1 year contract.

Why not? Yandle makes 6.5 mill for 3 years compared to Ghost at 4.5 cap hit. It would make sense for FLA to keep a little bit especially when Ghosts actual Salary is approx 2 mill less 3.25 mill x3 years compared to 5.75\5.25\5.2. They arent going to go crazy and keep 50% or anything but maybe like 500k to 1 mill.

Technically if Gus got moved we could keep some cap hit though I wouldnt want to

The other thing is whats reported might not be the whole picture. Could be a bigger deal involving multiple players.
