Can we agree that Romanov is further in his development than Sandin yet? - fifty__missions
The advantage that Romanov has always had is that he is naturally just more physical and more prepared for a man's game. They are basically both the same size, but you wouldn't know it looking at Romanov. |

the part of the conversation that is not being spelled out is this: PLD has 1 year left at $5m after this one.
Rielly has 1 year left at $5m after this one.
Hyman's deal @ $2.75m expires this year.
Nylander has 3 years left @ $6.9M after this year.
PLD is going to want in excess of $7m after next season. So is Rielly. Hyman is going to want probably $4m - $5m based on recent comparables. None of those are contracts Toronto can afford, especially since the cap is not likely to go up.
Saying that Clb would be interested, if you deal Nylander for PLD, you get $2m in 2021 and 2022 relief, but in 2023 you're probably back in the same problem or worse. Especially if you resigned Rielly.
I get what Pat is saying.
I'm not adverse to trading Willy for a player like PLD, but I'd be concerned about the coming cap ramifications. - Monkeypunk
That's pretty much it.. It's about cap concerns, but also, Nylander is better than Dubois.
As for contracts, Rielly and Dubois would balance each other out..
I suggested Rielly and Kerfoot for Savard and Dubois, because it could work out for both teams. With that said, it is all hypothetical... Since I have a strong feeling that Dubois is going to Ottawa

The problem Tortorella has is that he believes in public shaming as a method. It's a terrible tool to use in virtually any situation. It tears away trust and creates irreparable damage in a relationship. - Monkeypunk
I've been surfing the 'net for the past 30 minutes reading old Torts articles.
From everything I've read, the one cardinal sin Torts will not forgive is to say that you don't want to be there.
I don't think Torts is doing this to straighten out PLD.
IMHO, he's already written him off. The only thing left is the trade. |

Why are we convinced that PLD is being traded or is this just THE ISSUE of the day? Torts has benched players before. |

He isnt. At all.
Nylander does one thing well, scores goals while playing with JT/AM. A centreman has more value. |

I'm always struck by one thought in these threads:
How the frank do you guys know so much about a Columbus player?
Do you guys really watch Columbus games?
Although maybe my perception will change after I get the NHL package.
The year we lived in the US, ESPN2 had weird games every night. Nothing like watching an Arizona-Minnesota game to kill 3 hours of your life. |

you lost all credibility though saying Jones is overrated.
Jones, Provorov, Heiskanen, McAvoy.
Probably the 4best young d-men in the league (surely I'm forgetting someone, but still - Jones is far from overrated). |

Makar.
And no i didnt. NHL.com has Jones ranked 81st.
And he's 26, the same age as Rielly. |

Well we will need to agree to disagree...
Scoring goals is important.. What should not be surprising is that good players, play with other good players.. |

It's hard to evaluate that apples to oranges comparison. Dubois is a big body and he uses it (not often enough). He has decent hands, decent skating, and can make plays. Getting a big body who can win battles, fight for the puck, and be the power forward that can play top-6 minutes is a pretty coveted asset.
Nylander is a smooth skating player who is very cerebral in his game, but he sticks to his strengths and plays to those. His defense suffers as a result of his play. For those who *adore* Nylander, I'm not saying his positional play isn't improving or that his engagement isn't improving - but how Nylander engages will always be from the perimeter of the play, because his game is based on generating speed with the puck, and being bogged down in a scrum won't help him.
Nylander will likely always score more goals and get more points than Dubois, but it's possible that a player like Dubois will create more goals than Nylander. |

I get that, they are different players.. If we had someone that could play both styles that would be fantastic, but if we're looking for someone to get into a scrum/battle to create goals it shouldn't cost us Nylander.
While not as good as Dubois, we do have guys that can do that.. Just that they are on one year deals
