Haha good points on all but the first, in my opinion. I harken back to chemistry - TT fit in so well I bet they all 3 would be doing better.

Toffoli was alright but Canucks made the right move not tying themselves down for four years. This is an unusual year and next year Toffoli will not be playing the Canucks 9 times to pad his goals . The reality is he is probably a 20 goal scorer this year and 17 the next year and 14 the following .

The porous defense is not really all that different from last year, the only difference is they don't have Marky to bail them out anymore. Not signing him was definitely the right call, now the biggest issue to be addressed is allowing fewer & lower quality shots for the team as a whole.
- NorthNuck

Canucks clearly aren't ready to compete, so signing him through the years where he will probably start to drop off wouldn't be the best move.

The thing about Markstrom was we wanted him for two years not longer. No one argues about his value today , it was what will his value be in 3-4 years.

Canucks' 5v5 Two-way Numbers by Line

Elias Pettersson-3.37-37.0%
Bo Horvat-1.98-52.4%
Jay Beagle-2.63-47.7%
Adam Gaudette-3.67-38.2%

Bo Horvat’s line is pulling its weight, but it gets concerning very quickly after that. Beagle’s group has held its ground, but the Pettersson and Adam Gaudette lines are just hemorrhaging five-star scoring chances one after the other.

On the blue line, Quinn Hughes has displayed the type of defensive warts that we never really saw in his rookie season. He’s been unaware of the offensive threats around him, has consistently lost inside position in high danger areas and the team’s paid for it dearly. No Canuck defenceman has been on the ice for a higher rate of actual or expected goals against at 5-on-5, with Hughes posting a ghastly 36.8 percent expected goal share.

One would suspect there’s some collinearity between Pettersson and Hughes’ lacking two-way results given how much time they spend on the ice together, but it’s concerning nonetheless. Hughes has at least been an excellent offensive creator with six assists already, but he’s clearly not on his A-game either given his growing pains away from the puck.

-------------------------------------

Long read on the Athletic this morning, long story short, Pettersson and Gaudette lines are bleeding offensive chances like crazy. Losing Tanev hurting Hughes game a lot at this point!!

- Pacificgem

I disagree, Hughes is hurting Hughes game a lot, it's not his defensive partners fault Hughes can't stay on his feet, or whiff on his passes or tries to be the one man team turnover machine, Green needs to pull a Torts, Pettersson looks like poop.

Agree TT will probably be 20 goal scorer elsewhere. I just think he'd be more with EP & JT. Plus he would move Hog and JV back so they can battle for 2nd line, which i think is more reasonable than asking a rookie or JV to play 1st line consistently.

I'm not concerned with 4 years. Next year you lose sutter and pearson (although i would keep pearson). Year after Loui, Beagle, roussel. I think they'll be ok with the big contracts they need to sign.

Also don't think enough gets put on the cups TT and Pearson won with LA. I think you need guys like that that can still play. Less a fan of the older vet model strictly for cup/playoff experience.

Pearson Beagle Schmidt and Holtby have all won cups.

We have had a crowded schedule to start 6 games in 8 nights 4 of them on the road

Things will settle down in Feb and hopefully the team will be playing better.

I just realized looking at capfriendly for first time in a while, we have over $12M in players we are paying to not play between LE, Lou, Spooner and Sven .... we gotta be leading the league in that at least!

Damn, here I am trying to be optimist and say we're near the top at something haha.

LTIR different though, you get space back for that. I didn't include ferkland. $12M I speak of is dead space.

I actually change my stance now on any criticism of the team itself. It's a miracle we even field a (somewhat) competitive ice hockey team!

Now I can enjoy saturday's game more

You would be surprised how many teams have buried cap . Det is probably the worse with somewhere around 22 mil and if you include the Staal trade around 28 mil but they use him so I did not include him . Chicago is another team notorious for burying money and making players go away.

Who does Detroit have buried? I see only about 14.5 million if you include LTIR. Which is still a lot!

It never fails how after a big loss the sky is falling death knolls are bellowed.

So, is the team firing on all cylinders and falling short because they aren't good enough?

Is the coaching staff telling them to gift the puck away for break-aways?

Will QH, Petey, Schmidt etc continue to make giant gaffes because their hockey IQ is lacking?

Well if you answered yes congrats you are a hater and this must be nirvana for you. If then no, then perhaps the sun will rise on a new game and this season will unfold with less tears.

I just went and checked . I thought Datsyuk was there but he is not.

7.8 Non roster
6 Zetterberg LTIR
3.4 buyouts

Total 17.8 plus Marc Staal 5.7

Total 23 mil wasted cap

Marc Staal has played in every Redwing game and he's averaging 18 minutes a night

Edit: I thought the Coyotes would be worse but they've cleaned their act up a bit.

Edit: Edit: Canucks also at 17.8

And Loui played played 49 games last year but you considered him dead money . Can't pick and chose when it works and when it doesn't .

Marc Staal was traded this year because he was a waste of cap space , otherwise they would have not given up a second round pick to move him.

You can call a guy who's not played a second for your team wasted cap but not a guy who's played every game and 18 minutes a night....come on

Eriksson - 6 million (waived)
Benn - 2 million (non roster)
Ferland - 3.5 million (LTIR)
Spooner - 1 million (buyout)
Baertschi - 3.3 million (waived)
Luongo - 3 million (recapture) **NHL (frank)ed Benning**
Hawryluk - 800K (LTIR)

Not really worried about the club in general just the Holtby/Demko combo hasn't looked up to snuff. I have a feeling they will get it together. I still think that some of it has to do with Green being a bit disgruntled not being offered a contract after the PO run last season. IMO.

Ok so when Loui plays in the next few games we can remove his salary off the wasted money list. He will no longer be considered a bust
