I’m not sure how others are measuring effectiveness or at what depth.
Are we comparing Giroux the 1st line winger to other 1st line wingers?
And
Giroux as a 3rd line center to other 3rd line centers?
Then...at which position does he rank higher? - NC Flyers Fan
True but in all this it makes Patrick a Second line center, is that where he should be, I would say yes so far.

He is a huge story for the Flyers, very big deal to have him back with the injuries to Coots and Frost.

yeah if TK and Lindblom can play with him this season, they continue to gel, Patrick is healthy, you have a 1B first line. True enough having Hayes 1 and Patrick 2 is not ideal but it does show the depth. |

I just follow what my eyes tell me, and what both the on ice stats and advanced stats tell me. Its pretty clear. - MBFlyerfan
Really? So he was awesome in the playoffs? He’s taken this team by the horns this season. I think he finally scored a goal in the playoffs at center. I mean, if he’s so much better at wing, he must be unplayable at center. |

I'm surprised the NHL hasn't squeezed some money out of the taxi squad concept by partnering with Uber or Lyft. |

I don’t think anyone knows what to expect from G season in and season out, which is not a good thing. He’s either going to lights out or way off the Mark. |

I’m not sure that is fair, however, if you are referring to recent playoff performances for off the mark, I understand. This season and most of all his playoffs will be an important indicator of his current performance level.
Mostly he has looked good to start the season. |

Giroux hasn’t stood out. He hadn’t taken control. Crosby, Tavares and Stamkos are all doing what they do for their teams while wearing the “C”. G had a good season last year, not a great season, followed by a very poor playoff. I think Giroux is getting let off the hook to be honest. |

I thought there were a lot of people saying Giroux and Voracek needed to be better last playoffs. |

I think it’s a safe bet to lock him in around high 30s low 40s points wise if he plays the full season, and if we play the full season. |

The whole team sucked outside of Hayes Laughton and Hart. I flagged this on accident |

I thought Provorov, Sanheim and Myers were very good too. In fact I didn’t have much of an issue with the defense outside of Niskanen. |

It’s a tiny 4 games, no preseason, sample size, but yeah, I think he has been noticeable and positively impacted both play driving, scoring and defense.
I was pretty hard on his recent postseasons. There was no letting him off the hook. He has to be better there.

Sanheim played incredibly soft, but the defense as a whole wasn’t much of the issue. |

I don’t say this with hate or anger. I think we should all go look at Giroux’s stats of the last three seasons prior to this season.
102 points in 82 games
85 points in 82 games
53 points in 69 games.
There is no reason he can’t lead the charge the same way other stars do in my opinion. Which is why I feel we’re letting him off the hook. These are really good numbers and they’re pretty recent. |

It’s only week one. By week 4 or 5, G better be top 3 in points for his team. I don’t care if he’s at center or wing. |

Brian Boyle is 6’6.” You’re trying to tell me that a single inch is the cutoff?!! Kevin Hayes is 6’5”. Morin is a good skater. And just because he tries the LW position now to get back to gameshape, he can still return to defense later. He may even pick up new skills. - NC Flyers Fan
That is why I stated "good" forwards, Brian Boyle is far from a good forward.

The fact that men over 6’6” only make up .1% of the earth’s population might be a factor worth considering. How many become professional athletes? How many in hockey? Is there a tendency in coaching to put the tall kid on defense or goaltending?
How much of this has to do with the few and not really anything to do with “can” and ability? - NC Flyers Fan
I mentioned already that there is a tendency to move the bigger kids to defense as they grow. This is because that is the best position for them in hockey. It is very difficult for a towering player to compete for pucks against smaller and more agile players, that's just a fact. The smaller players skate, cut and pivot faster. One more thing just to clarify, what I meant is I believe (again not saying this is a bonified truth) that EACH sport has its optimal height, so this is not about the same height applies to the NHL and NBA or NFL. Its different for each sport, and again just my opinion based on my experience, I have seen any study or article that validates this perspective. Some people have mentioned some tall forwards, like Nick Bjugstad , and agree, I never said it was impossible to play forward, what I am saying is you can't find a top 6 guy in the NHL. Nick had a few good years in Florida, but he has had some injuries and never rose above 0.5 pt/game player.
