I'm three Manhattans in.

New recipe: 2oz of bourbon. 1oz of sweet vermouth. Instead of bitters, a few dashes of MAGA tears. Delicious.

Manhattans are great. I also have a bottle of Famous Grouse for Rob Roys.

Dude. Rob Roys are such overlooked cocktail. I've never had Famous Grouse. What style of scotch is that?

For a proper Manhattan, you gotta have good vermouth. I recommend Dolin. Not that Cinzano or Martini&Rossi crap. 🥃

It’s an affordable very unpeated blend. Basically the flip side to Johnny Walker Black which is the very affordable peated blend. I find that overly peated scotches don’t play well with sweat vermouth, although opinions obviously vary on that. Typically when I drink scotch, I drink for the peat (Laphraoig is my favorite single malt), but specifically for Rob Roys I really just want a hint of it and nothing more.

I live by a hipster liquor store that only sells locally sourced small batch stuff and the vermouth I got from there out of Virginia was quite good. It cost $25 for a small bottle, but I enjoyed it and support local business during these tough times, right?

Beer. Specifically Miller. Love it, bought it, go to any bar and people are drinking Miller, Yuengling and Coors. Mostly Miller and Coors but some people drink Pennsylvania (Yuengling).

Nice. I don't like peaty scotches. I enjoy MaCallan for that reason. I absolutely cannot do Laphroig. That flavor never leaves your mouth. lol

Alright. I guess we agree on a couple of things ;-)

I also have been getting Amarena cherries from Trader Joe’s. Not bad and good price point.

Hahahah I totally used those tonight! The best value ever! It's better than $25 a bottle for Luxardo.

I cannot support using single malt scotches in cocktails. They are to be enjoyed neat or with a splash of water.

I can agree. I like Jura scotches though. That peaty flavor is just too strong for me.

Not a fan but people buy it.

I can drink beer all night. Give me scotch, whiskey or anything hard and my problem is - I drink it all night. True story, when I was in the service the next door neighbor (actually we lived in a duplex) drank only whiskey. I don't remember what kind, it was almost forty years ago. I didn't make it home. The wife found me passed out in the flower bed. Swore it off then and haven't touch a drop since.

Uncanny! What bourbon do you use/like? (I actually prefer rye for my Manhattans)

Bulliet rye for cocktails for me.

Get out! Twinsies! Great value. Sometimes I splurge for Michter’s.

My go-to bourbon for sipping and whatnot is Willett Pot Still Reserve.

Bulliet is great value. And when it comes to cocktails that’s what I look for. I think there’s a lot of diminishing returns in using really high end stuff to mix with other things. There’s just no point to the complexity of the spirit’s flavor if it’s gonna be drowned in vermouth or Campari. So I try to find the highest quality bottle that doesn’t crack $50.

The exception to my rule are old fashions. I think the make up of that drink still allows you to enjoy your bourbon. I’m also not a huge bourbon guy and strongly prefer scotch and Irish whiskey to it. The sweetness is often times too much for my palette.

Actually I used Bulleit Bourbon. Rye is my favorite whiskey in general and I use that for my old fashioneds. Willett is my all time fave, but I only do that straight. Bulleit Rye and Sagamore are my favorite Ryes for cocktails.

I find Rye less sweet which is why I love them for Old Fashioneds.

I only do Campari and SV for Negronis. I truthfully don’t love a ton cocktails. I prefer neat or a couple of cubes. If it’s like a really good cocktail place that does those old school prohibition cocktails I’ll try some different things.

This world is (frank)ed up. It's like the Oregon governor.. legalizes hard drugs then turns around and tells people to call the police on others who have too big of gatherings lol. Some whack (frank)ing peeps.
- 668710

Because that “war on drugs” campaign since the 70’s has been working so well.

Alcohol is a poison that kills your cells, ages you, numbs your sensations and dumbs you down. You consume it because your government decided that it was the drug to help them the most, not you, and you've been indocnorated that it's the safe, legal and socially accepted drug since you were born. Hell, it's not even considered a drug by most. Ironically it's one of the worst and most harmful drugs to your body/system.

To each their own though.

I consume it because I enjoy it and am well aware of the dangers. Most people of this generation are well aware alcohol is more dangerous than marijuana and hallucinogens, and that’s why legalization has so much steam. To say I’ve been indoctrinated by the government to consume alcohol is insane. This teetotaler mentality got us Prohibition in the 20s and is no better than people advocating the war on drugs. You can advocate legalization of marijuana without being a (frank)ing dweeb about it.
