Marner's is huge in a way as it exposes an abuse of power over an inexperienced young player that seems pretty rampant in hockey (especially the junior leagues). Babcock knew exactly what he was doing with Marner and when he exposed the list to Bozak.

I suspect Bozak showed discomfort seeing the list and, only then, did Babs realize he over-stepped himself. Any apology he gave Mitch was likely damage control.

Maybe he's learned though?

Digressing, the Franzen stuff is pretty (frank)ed.

Or the marner incident was just poor judgment as most have said

Babcock refers to himself in the 3rd person still in that article.

Babcock on the Marner situation, simplified:

“That’s not how it happened at all!”

“I made Marner make the list of who had the best to worst work ethic in the league, when Bozie came in I used the fact that Marner made a list for my own personal gain to make bozie try harder, bozie was like HUH? So I tried to damage control
the room by saying I (frank)ed up”

Mike Reilly? He was good in either Michigan or Minnesota. I thought he would be better when the Wild signed him as a FA out of college and it just never worked out. Hope it does for him.

I might be off on the details here.

He was a great coach at one point until I think he bought into his own hype and became an inflexible egomaniac.

Not sure if he gets a job any time soon but this NBC gig is certainly a showcase for him to try to build back the respect. A bit of humility would be a great start.

- mjones242

Guys with big egos don’t last in Toronto. Burkie, Babs, Wilson to name a few. All the attention brings out the worst in them.

Scotty Bowman, one of the best coaches in NHL history, was a manipulative bastard. He makes Babs look like Mr Rogers. I think the bigger issue is whether he’s simply behind the time and refuses to adapt. Maybe the NBC gig is an opportunity to show he’s still got the chops.

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you, that you would try to downplay this event and suggest "most" people are of like mind.

Marner stuff at least he realized and apologized right away, I’m sure he told Bozak that Mitch called Kessel the laziest mofo in the league

Whataboutscottybowmanisms aside, I think the issue is that there is a massive power imbalance between coaches and young players that is baked into the DNA of hockey.

It's great to see Babs - and coaches of his persuasion - have to face the music.

Again, I think everyone deserves a shot at redemption. I'm just not convinced by Babs's exceptionally late and conspicuous addressing of these transgressions.

Time will tell.

Excellent point many of the greatest coaches in NHL history were pr!cks. In fact try to put a list of the best coaches and see how many were nnice guys. (It true for many sports)

The ironic thing is, he didn't need to. Helen Keller could have coached those teams to cups.

Seriously, has anyone ever looked at the talent on his 9 cup winners? The 2002 Wings were probably his worst cup winning team ever...
