Be "emotional" in private. What is he, a woman approachimg PMS? Emotional? This is his (frank)ing job.

What he did was unprofessional amd pulling rank since he knows Sielski cant call him out for *his* shortcomings on the job. Does Sielski have kids?

Hope the league teaches him a good hard lesson. A 1 game suspension is what I would love to see.

I’m one of the few who still gets the inquirer delivered daily. I’m disappointed with the way the sports section has grown more and more sensationalistic (if that’s a word?) and just mean spirited. I guess I understand it. They’re desperate for readers, and it is just sports, but it does leave a bad taste in my mouth. That Sielski story about Jake laughing behind the coaches back was just bad and irresponsible reporting by a guy who doesn’t often cover the Flyers.
- Dkos

Fair enough.

I don't ever remember it being stellar, frankly. I know many people worshipped Bill Lyons, but I always found him somewhat banal. I remember his writing about Kotite's brain cancer and how Ray Rhodes would bring us the Super Bowl.

I came to Philly early 90s. Dunno before that.

oh boy, you fail to grasp the simplicity of my statement. Regardless of the landscape that newsprint media faces, they are responsible for the content they produce to the public. The content of news service is substandard and their columnists offer nothing but agendizend commentary. This is the bed they made, on their on volition. It has fallen from grace and become a rag.....it can rot
- KINGKENZO

Content requires talent and resources, which requires money. You have provided no corroboration of your strange vendetta except repeat it.

Are you aware how many people have been bought out? How international and national reporting is now completely monopolized by national outlets?

I know Trudy Rubin personally, as I do several journalists there, past and present. She is a Pulitzer winner for foreign correspondence. Where are the resources to hire someone like her when she is gone? Who will read long articles like she used to write?

Haha. The hockey panel on sports net just had a good conversation about jakes response to the question last night. Haha. Some interesting takes by Burke and bieksa

I am curious if the story gets covered by someone other than these guys, like a non-sports journalist.

I see your insight on this subject persists in its quality from the last time we talked about it.

Especially manifesting itself in the claim that the Inquirer made its own bed. It did not. Any more than the Chicago Tribune, (now desperately trying to stop itself being sold to a Hedge Fund) did, nor the LA TImes (saved by a billionaire doctor) nor Washington Post (saved by Bezos) nor Newsweek or the City Paper and the Welcomat (not saved by anyone, the last 2 you will recall used be in every corner of downtown Philly just 20 years ago).

What made the bed for them is social media, and an idiot population, and brutal Anglo-Saxon style capitalism. French and German newspapers did not meet the same fate.

A full 60% of Americans have little to no trust in mass media according to Gallup that has been tracking media trust since 1972. Journalism’s decline cannot be narrowed to social media...heck, a majority of people today likely get their news from social media platforms than compared to traditional print and network news.

It’s a pretty sad little paper these days, but I’m doing my part to support local news. I liked Bill Lyon. The autobiographical stuff he wrote about his battle with Alzheimers, near the end of his life, was heart breaking.

Simmonds getting some looks on the PP.

Leafs leaning hard on their young guys, most noticeably William Nylander. I’d spread that talent around a little more. Thornton is no Slouch and I’m seeing Nylander being used as a net front presence at times. I don’t understand having a small guy or even a skilled guy there. Get your grinders, power forwards and guys willing to break their face to get the puck in the net. Thornton as a big body downlow and on the wing I think good coaching now that he’s older.

I thought Lyon and Conlin were good. Even Jason Stark and Steven A Smith provided decent columns back in the day. All that quality journalism left the building a long time ago.

ok ask them why the Inquirer would run a story of the death of the son of a prominent city attorney, in which, the attorney stated that he died from fall off of a ladder taking down Christmas decorations when a simple google search would have revealed a story from a Las Vegas newspaper , two days prior, of a man committing suicide by jumping off of a Casino parking garage. No addendum was ever written.
Or more recently, posting an article interviewing the participants of the most recent looting of the stores of the Aramingo shopping district. The several interviewees stated they were not protesting the shooting of a man by Phila police but their intentions were solely to loot and they even Ubered there from Upper Darby. Then within hours, pulling the article from the website. Could not be found in the archive.

Again, you want to confound a simple issue of quality content and the responsibility of reporting facts with other issues. There is no strange vendetta but you really are a strange bird.

AV looked at several players on the top pair in camp did he not? Not reading much into it; plus Ghost is the best option if your keep the 2nd pair intact.

You hope you have plenty of options going forward. That being said going forward doesn’t apply to the present. Also your not taking away anything as you play the best players you have at your disposal.

If they are a defenseman away in their eyes come the deadline you make a move.

- Striiker

So you would give up a young player such as Farabee, Frost or Lindblom. You'd give up a prospect like York or Zamula?

Stop and think what a defenseman who will actually make a difference will cost. I don't think you have.

Agree with you. Not buying it either. The Flyers had the same sort of trouble, and the same degree of trouble, as they did against the same teams they played 6-7 times in the regular season and never won in regulation.

This suggests the problems were structural rather than due to layoff or presence of infant children.

- PT21

That ignores that for months the Flyers played with strong structure and were one of the hottest teams in the league leading up to the stoppage. They had a very strong team game. Team structure requires execution. Your analysis of what it suggests, shows a lack of understanding of the game. So what happened between the stoppage and the bubble? What factors on the team were different?
Again, you never fail to disappoint with stupidity coming from someone who claims to be smarter than everyone else.

I saw it as a power imbalance move. I might be barking up the wrong tree here, buts lets at least get on common ground about the source of the objection. Mine wasn't based on sensitivity to profanity.

- PT21

Of course it was. You're going to write a letter to the NHL and the Flyers! LMAO

I am not sure we agree on the metrics used to argue this. More Americans believe in the Devil than Darwin.

The coincidence in the fall of media and the rise of social media is not my invention. It is a well studied thesis. If there was progressive disenchantment with big media, we should have seen people just tuning out before social media came. But we didn't.

Social media offers quick "news", free "news", and most importantly, allows you to tailor your "news" to what you want to hear. It also allows you to interact via comments and so on. Its not surprising that it flourishes. The results are plain to see.

The good news though is that a certain cream is rising to the top. Its not the Inky, but the NYT has been doing well for several years now (and would do even better if the Sulzbergers cared about that aspect and monetized the brand). There are 10-20 or so sources in the world and almost everyone who is successful or educated or both reads at least one of them, irrespective of political affiliation

Journalism, like many other things, is becoming a class stratified endeavor. Its sad, because its not like the flavor of ice-cream you choose.

I am unfamiliar with both of these issues, so cannot in all honesty comment on them.

Butn, if I understand correctly, your point is that Inky is suffering from a lack of journalistic integrity and that, rather than industry-wide malaise, is the cause for its decline?

Can you provide some proof of this claim? Where you can say that it is due to bad/inaccurate reporting that it is suffering and not because every newspaper (except a few) are? I am happy to keep an open mind.

And yes, I am a very strange bird.

Look what Stephen Smith had to become after leaving the Inky. A barking, shouting, mouthpiece.

And look how successful he has been, in the time his paper has declined.

And therein lies the lesson.

It was indeed. Ray Diddy thought it deserved a Pulitzer. The part about his beloved wife. He was old school, and I respect him.

In general though, its not just media or even newspapers. Its the ability for any cerebral endeavor, sometimes even the most rudimentary. When I was growing up, cashiers did not need calculators to perform the most elementary of arithmetic. College faculty now bemoan the lack of reading and writing skills which have steadily languished. Those who would have studied math or Physics now study programming. We have trouble keeping students occupied enough to not peek at cellphones. No one reads books.

It’s not a perfect apples to apples comparison though. ESPN is largely in the entertainment business...at least sports pundits like Steven A on the tv side are. The Inquirer and other troubled publications like the Boston Globe from my understanding can largely blame their decline to poor management. I believe the Inquirer was last sold for around $60M...the previous owner bought it for around $200M around the turn of the millennia.

Edit: it was purchased in 2006 for $515 Million. Six years later it was sold for $55M.

So, is there industry wide poor management then? How come all these papers, news magazines, local weeklies all suddenly started to suffer from poor management in the same 15 odd year span?

Interesting scoreboard tonight. Oilers waxed, Rangers flipped the script, Boston lost to devils. I’m sure all those teams have their own D zone coverage issues etc.
