Oh man if I have to be subject to Tanev getting ripped on every game thread this year I’m gonna just stick to reddit. He was far from our worst defenseman yesterday. Todd is a fvckin advanced stats simp.

Right after we scored that 3rd goal & we were looking real good he said it looks like the Flames are going to be able to break the season opener losing streak they have had since 2009 or 08. Hrudey started to dig him about putting the kiss of death on them & sure as sh!t the wheels started to come off lol

Pretty bad when we're that fragile of a team that superstitions must be heeded

That’s Taboo 101 when reporting, but that’s not why the Flames lost. I blame Ward for his line selections in the 2nd period. Why wasn’t Simon in there?
Agree with Todd that Bennett should be playing higher in the line up.

DEDDIE

I personally thought Tanev was excellent and playing in the defensive zone was not a fault of his. Thank god we had him in the 2nd and 3rd in fact.
I did not think the Vali/Nesterov pair looked good at all.

Agreed - they sucked.

Say what you will about Tanev's Corsi/advanced stats but the eyeball test he didn't look bad. There were lots of plays in their own end where Hanifin couldn't get the puck out that hemmed them in a few times but they seemed to deal with it. I also wasn't very critical of Markstrom, he was good not great, that first Laine goal was an unbelievable finish and the others were incredibly high danger chances.

I was more critical of the small lapses from Gio, sure we all thought that Anderson play was a sure goal but Gio buddy, play until the whistle. I by far thought that was the worst game Lucic played as a flame. He turned the puck over a ton and made those around him worse.

Overall, if they can bring something in between the first period and the second then they will be fine this year. Also, yes I couldn't agree more I know it's one game but that Lucic/Nordstrom is hazardous. One of them on their own can be sheltered but together are a dumpster fire waiting to happen

Got the early lead, got cocky & quit playing. Very sad for the first game!

Time to get a new mascot name, I'm proposing they go for Harvey the Heimlich Hound. Kids can line up during intermission and give Harvey the Heimlich while spitting up a half chewed hotdog.

One game, literally the first hockey most of these guys have played in months...meh.
If this is game 25, ya, I get it. We got a point which will matter.
I did expect Vali to play better. He looked afraid to be out there. Hopefully game 1 jitters...

That was exactly my thoughts when we scored that 3rd goal & Rick Ball opens his fcking mouth. What a turd!!! It was such a d!ck thing to do at that point of the game.
I was furious the rest of the game & wished I knew how to get social media to lobby getting the idiot kicked off the Flames broadcasting crew. Moron. Cant believe he did that.

- Kevin R

I know what you mean Kevin R, when Rick Ball made that comment I thought WTF, (frank)ing moron. I'm sure he likes sucking balls because after that comment the Flames played liked balls.

I think calder winner will come from ottawa, just because they have so many rookies and many top 10 drafted players. And it's always hard for D man to win Calder anywy.

For the most part between the different writers on the site I’ve found that Todd isn’t even as extreme to the analytics side as the others. But boy you’re right that when he has a strong opinion on a player he’s as stubborn as a mule with it.

Personally I love this site for the community itself as for the most part the members here are fairly moderate with at worst an insane bias towards their own team which isn’t a bad thing. That said I do recall EK posting one or two ads for bloggers and a requirement was essentially being deeply rooted with analytics.

10 years ago this site was written by people like you and me but an exodus of those people happened a little before the former yotes mathematician came in. (If anyone remembers cloutier as the oilers blogger would remember he was nuts but I’d take that over some of the analytics die hards).

All in all analytics can be a useful tool but those of us who have been around the game for decades know what’s up when we see it.

Most of what I’ve seen on Instagram and Twitter is analytics pages marketing their accounts with gimmicks geared towards new hockey fans and kids whose parents decided they were old enough to have these social media accounts (which is literally around 12 these days). Add those into multi sport causal viewers and those whose analytics support their opinions and you’ll find that the online market for analytics is rapidly growing while those of us who have been watching the game at least before the 05’ lockout is shrinking. But this is just online and as far as I can tell right now actual in life debates tend to throw analytics out the window, at least on one end.

Lastly I’ll end this black hole rant I’ve found myself in by making a challenge. If Todd actually reads the comments of his blogs I would like him to post tanev’s analytics from the first period alone in the next pregames blog. Regardless of wether they support the stats or not I would like to know what his analytics are when this team is playing at its best. I can’t imagine they’re any worse than Nestorov.

Personally I got Josh Norris as a dark horse. His progression from college to AHL leads me to believe he could have great success as a center in the nhl in the right environment, and with either tkachuck or stutzle as one of his wingers I think he stands a chance

More proof that Todd probably doesn't even go over the highlights. Why is he specifically calling out Nordstrom for the second goal when he was the one guy on the line who wasn't a disaster on that goal. We're just ignoring the fact that Lucic made a perfect no look backhand pass right to an open Ehlers in the slot for no reason at all. There's no spreadsheet for that one.

People also need to relax. It's January, there's COVID, they barely had a camp, and there were zero preseason games. All the teams have looked bad so far.

+1 on the 1rst paragraph.

You're also right on the fact that no camp doesn't help and that almost all teams have been dumpster fires defensively so far. But still, some weaknesses are carry-overs from last year and thus really concern me, such as :

- Gio often looks reallllllly slow and sometimes downright lost out there
- Mony and Gaudreau have close to negative value at 5v5
- 2nd pair (exception being the Hanifin-Andersson pair from last year's playoffs) doesn't do the job against deep teams
- Once big and physical teams turn on the machine, we're not competitive at all

Hopefully we're gonna be able to turn those things around.

well, welcome back you puckheads. he does get a bee in his tighty whiteys. if he actually watched the game the whole game and not just record it and skim through it.he would get a better respect on what tanev does out there. yes he does make mistakes, but doesn't everyone. I'm not pumping tanev's tires . but he plays hard at a hard position and does adequately good job. if he wants to female dog about a player then female dog about Johnny. rarely back checking. rarely winning a battle along the boards, always letting the opposing player get the puck first. being intimidated whining, looking like he is always hurt. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Ummm, this site is called Hockeybuzz. That alone should say enough about whats posted, written, whatever you want to call it and the quality. I'm glad theres something written to talk about... Eklund is a joke but here we all are on his site with his writers debating hockey. At least we don't get CBC reporters writing stories because they'd find a way to inject covid or the love in they have for Trudeau in every other paragraph.
