Hey LA (soon to be Vegas)? I get what you are saying, but aside from it being apples to oranges, since they are all on different teams, I think it's kind of a waste of energy to compare what our current disasters do vs our former disasters.

True, I watched the Kings game. Maata is still slow. He took a holding penalty with 1 minute left in the game because he couldn't keep up.

Nope. Same rule. The Hawks could only do the Kane thing because he was out through the whole regular season. If he came back early, the team would've been over the cap. So, if they make some trades and use Toews' cap space, he's done for the regular season, but would be available for the playoffs (gagged a bit there).

It's so clear to me now.

$11+ mil available. DuBois at $5mil, Barkov at $5.9 mil. Squeeze into the playoffs and bring back Toews and Dach.

Stan is a frickin' genuis.

We were talking about Toews. They don't get to accrue, or bank, extra space by putting him on LTIR now, as opposed to a day before the LTIR. If they we exactly at the cap if they put a $10.5M player on LTIR, they can add $10.5M in salary today. If they wait until the TDL to add salary, they can still only add $10.5M in salary. Unused LTIR doesn't accrue, according to CapFriendly. This is why I said that putting Toews on LTIR now has no benefit.

If, on the other hand, they were $10.5M under the cap, they would accrue cap space, and would be able to add millions more in salary at the trade deadline.

- mohel

I don't think it matters, i think Toews is out indefinitely, the grim reports coming out, to hear Sopel say he can beat it? Not good hope he gets well.

The Chicago Bulls might provide an example for the Blackhawks.

They’ve been nothing short of awful for years. This season, the only player addition is a #1 draft pick. While 4-7, they’ve lost the last 3 games by a total of 9 points, including a loss to the defending NBA Champion Lakers by 2 points, on the road. They’re competitive, and their defense is significantly improved.

They also made a few front office changes.

Their coach also has a nice resume of coaching success and probably isn't a moron.

So along with Saad's -3 in Colorado's opening game

Olli Maata -2 in over 21 minutes. His defensive partner Doughty was -3.

Jokiarihu -2 in over 14 minutes.

- LAHawk

And Gustafson - 2 PP assists, +/- 0

I really hope this is a sign of things to come and not just the "hockey is back" bump.

Last night's @penguins - @NHLFlyers matchup is NBCSN's most-watched regular-season NHL game on record.

📺Opening night tripleheader is NBCSN's most-watched multi-game Opening Night on record and UP 29% vs. last season.

I watched him coach in Florida, defensive minded coach but also understood on offense you can't stand around without the ball, i think he's a very good coach.

I'm curious about another defensive minded coach, Coach Q? This will be his 2nd year in Florida and in any sport defensive minded really good coaches do well if they don't forget the little things.

What does this paragraph mean then?

Once the ACSL is calculated and the LTIR is being used, if the team recalls a player, they must have enough relief to cover both their salary and any potential performance bonuses they could get this season. But, these performance bonuses can come out of either the performance bonus relief pool, or the salary relief pool. So, it is not an issue if the player on the LTIR had no performance bonuses, but the recalled player does. For once, the LTIR took the easy way out in a situation.

- LAHawk

I believe it deals with performance bonuses and how much space is needed when calling up a kid with performance bonuses in his contract when a vet goes down.

This is certainly a confusing topic, which was discussed a lot when Kane was hurt. One clue is the "projected LTIR used" item on the Hawks' Capfriendly page - it shows the Hawks already above the ACSL. Another is the "Deadline Cap Space" for the Hawks is 0, even though they have Toews on LTIR.

And that could be the reason why Kurashev and Hagel were not in on opening night. This way after putting Toews on LTIR, any performance bonus they accrue will be offset by Toews. Dach's $2.5 mil. in bonus goes away because he himself is on LTIR.

Did you hear Bettman(owners) crying about how they are losing so much money? I'm sure they are but to tell me they thought it was their obligation to play hockey this year, why can't they just be honest and say yeah this year is going to sting but we have to play this season so we can fulfill the last year of this tv contract so we can cash in on the next tv contract.

Does anyone else think it's awesome that Hinostroza, Duclair and Gus Forsling are all on FLA? Just me?

It just seems like there are three Chicago teams out there. AZ, CHI, and FLA.

I didn't see this. Was this a press release, or during some conference call? I knew they were complaining about losing money (since they are).

I think your last point goes without saying, but they don't like to say it out loud.

I can see now, the owners in all major sports will say they have to raise ticket prices to make up for the lost revenue.

Could be, but I didn't look very close to that. Typically you want to be as close to the Cap as possible when you put a player on LTIR, in order to maximize the amount of LTIR space available. But is very complex, especially with three guys going on LTIR around the same time.

What I was saying earlier is that putting Toews on LTIR now suggests he may be out for the year, because the only benefit to putting him on LTIR is to use his cap space. Can't do that if he comes back this year.

LTIR is accrued by day (game). So if Toews would miss 1/2 the season, Hawks would still have about $5 mil. in LTIR space. i don't know if LTIR is gross, minus escrow, or prorated for the shortened season. I don't see Stan using it so will just check puckpedia once in awhile to see what the Hawks have.

I hope so too.

Starting last Wednesday you had at least one NHL game being played for the next 116 days.

Watched a little bit of the NYI/NYR game. Boy, Barzel is fun to watch.

He said we are not playing this season to make money, we actually are going to lose money and we're not talking about the M word we are talking about the B word.

Imagine the fall out if they didn't play this year. I'm glad the tv deal is coming up otherwise they might of shot themselves in the foot

Regardless of what they say - owners will raise prices as long as people pay the prices.

If people don’t - they won’t.
