My point was that current college athletes could be doing this now and making bank.

Done right, some of these guys that never make it could set themselves up nicely.

- dadeadhead

guys like Jaret Patterson could bank a few hundred k, and if he busted in nfl still be more comfortable then anyone we knew at 22

He's also way ahead of most we knew at 22 because he also has no student loans.

I'm not opposed to college players getting paid, but the narrative that they get nothing is also mind numbingly false.

I’m trying like hell to convince my 17 yr old son to go to trade school.

Why be $100k in debt, when you could be making $100k a year at the same age?

I forked over 75 grand in my biology/chemistry degree

made $12 an hour as a field biologist in the late 90's

$14 an hour in the early 2000's as a chemist

never got on with the city or state due to extra points for skin color, gender or military weighted points

made 60 grand running a large aquarium store for 5 years
made 60 grand counting ot at a distribution center

if I had to do it all over again, I would have kept bartending instead of pursuing my 4 year degree after getting my AA and then did my business full time at 32 instead of 47

Not a lot of young talent in the trades. If he decides to go union they get great benefits plus an annuity. I've seen many guys that got started right after high school and retired comfortably in their 50s after a career as a journeyman. If someone is motivated, they can move up to foreman/super and make an even better living.

What trade is paying 100K/year right out of trade school, or ever (unless you start/own your own business)? We need more people to go and learn trades, don't get me wrong, it's just not nearly as drastic as that. Not even close. And long term income potential isn't as strong either. If you do it right, you can get your BA and a Master's and only have 50K or less in debt when you're done. After getting my Master's several years after my BA my next job paid 18K more a year. You just have to be smart about it.

No trade pays that right out of high school that I know of. But no reason you can’t make 50k or more depending on what trade you go into. I got a BS in civil engineering from a private school and graduated with 15k in date early 2000s. But I saved while I worked in high school and college and put like 80% of that towards college and was lucky enough to have parents that paid for 2 years for me.

There are like 10 schools that bring in 50% of that money

IF every D1 football player got paid an equal yearly stipend no matter which school or position or place on the depth chart, on top of the scholarships you might be able to convince me

Depends on where you are. Due to the unbelieveable growth down here, all the trades are dying for quality help...untrained, just be reliable and work hard and they bank really good money...learn the business and open your own business...killing it!
